Timing cover gasket

When installing the timing cover, do I put the gasket in dry? Or use RTV on both sides of the gasket? What do you guys do?

I put mine on dry. No issues here. With it being ribbed I didn't think it needed any rtv

i put a very thin coat just to give it a tackyness when applying it. remember there is a water passage through it so it's best to err on the side of over protection.

I did a thin bead of RTV. Check my notch build thread for pictures.

I put the gaskets will a little rtv to hold them in place. I got the cover bolted on and my dumbass forgot to lube the chain with some oil. Does the chain need to be lubricated?

I put a line on both sides..just enough to where it barely squishes out (then I wipe off the excess RTV).....I think you'll be ok with the timing chain

Also, I notice before I put the cover on after I torqued the cam bolt, I turned the engine over with the ratchet, and it feels like the chain was skipping, it was not smooth, like it was not gripping and then after a few turns it was smooth and fine. I looked at the chain and all the teeth are on the gears. The marks are still lined up correctly. I don't know what happened? Or why it did that? Is that normal?

I used this and haven't had any leaks.
