I need new rear tires and wanted to go alittle wider. I have 275-40-17, and was looking to get 285-40-17. would there be much of a difference in width. Would it fit on my 9 inch rim. Would the side wall be the same as the front 245-45-17's thanks

On what size rim? If they're 9" I wouldn't go more than 285s. If it's a 8" rim I wouldn't go past 275s.

Nittos tend to run a little smaller, width wise, than most tires.
I wouldn't run anything wider than a 275 on a 9" wheel, but thats just me.

Damn why not just do it the right way. BUY SOME RIMS. Your going to take a corner and that tire is going to pop right off. That'll fuck your day up

I have 275's on my 10.5's...is that almost too small of a tire for that wide of a rim?
Not necessarily the ideal size. The reason im running the size i am is i wanted a deep dish rim on the rear and still wanted the tire to still be wider than the rim so you dont see the lip of the rim from the rear... only tire baby.

Wow. I'm really touched that you care so much.
This isn't my first time around the block, kiddo;
I've been running 285s on stock rims for years.
Where will I be bringing the corner once I "take it?"

sorry just my $0.02
"If it was alright to put a 275 on an 8" rim, the manufacturer would recommend it. They've obviously done testing on the effects of wide tires being mounted on narrow rims, and found it to be unsafe. If you don't believe me, go to any BIG NAME tire shop and ask them this question. Most of them won't even mount the tire for you since it would be a liability. The rim width range for each tire size that a manufacturer publishes is correct. You will always get the best ride, longest treadlife, and best traction if you mount the tire on a rim that's right in the middle of the recommended range. Personally, I think a 275 is pushing the envelope a little too far on an 8" rim, and a 285 would be just plain stupid. But hey, it's not up to me."

not 100% sure about this but,if i remember correctly, the smaller tires (245s) that they put on the 8" wheel are there because it offers the best "gas mileage". and the bosely tire out here told me i should put 305s on my 9" rim to get the most traction
