did you do something to earn it at least or was it one of those just driving along and.... I hate those.
Just cruising and by chance I was quite slow. The tire locked sideways and braked the car by itself. Brake caliper pins broke, pads flew out and by chance nothing else broke. But my differential and the axle was badly repaired before, I think thats why it broke. And I have 1.5" spacers in the back

Gawl Dang! hopefully none of the body work was affected.

And seeing this is not helping my anxiety about adding wheel spacers to my rear wheels

the way it looks like it just sheared off, did it take an impact at some time? I would have thought to do something like that you would have to smack it hard enough to break a rim but then again a lot of small vibrations over time can have the same effect.

That's quite the shear. Must have been fractured for a while and the crack must have slowly walked its way through

just playing devils advocate, do we think the spacers had anything to play in it? I have to be honest I did not know we could use a 1.5" spacer or that they made them that large. I thought the largest I had heard used was 1". They could be off just enough to cause the vibrations and I have no idea how the actual space between the wheel and the hub it makes would play into it, just curious if the what the experts here would say.

Me with all them years job shop machining, seeing all kind weird fluke of problems, thats exactly what I thought. Axle was compromised straight from the factory.

I wouldn't guess that 1.5" spacers would put any more stress than a wider wheel like came factory on the Bullit. I put 1" on mine, just enough to get the fender lip to look like the front.
I would agree with the previous comments that either a bad previous repair or factory defect was the culprit. Shearing and axle seems quite unusual.

Sheared off right at the bearing interface......could very well be that the moment placed on that part of the shaft by extending the wheel farther out was just enough to finally do it in.

I thought 1" was the norm, I can only think that this wheel was not great for a mustang and needed it to correct it. It seems like extending it %50 more than that would create more of a force that could cause this to me. I am not sure the correct terms to describe it and certainly not an expert or even stayed at a holiday in. I have just read that spacers CAN cause problems like this but after all this time it is the first time I have seen a problem like this and I am sure I have seen a lot of cars with spacers....

Axles are case hard manufactured, which means the external surfaces are heat treated to a certain depth of the material and the remaining material is still soft. This gives the axle a spring like return to normal state after torsional twist. Your axle looks like hard throughout the entire material....over hardend. You ask me, it was simply a fluke axle.

Ive seen some serious torsional twist with stock mustang axles at the splined ends and they never twisted off or broke.

so now the question is do ya upgrade, or stick with stock. If you were closer I still have my stock set but I think shipping would suck as long/heavy as they are

I could see that the axle had weld marks at the broken area. Someone messed with it before. I have a new axle in and it is working now but I had luck not to be fast and the wheel stuck inside the wheel housing. This kept the car up and not on the ground
