Transmission/AODE, no 4th

I was driving my car, and I was spinning at about 5000 RPMS when I believe it was trying to shift and instead of properly shifting I no longer have 4 gear.
I can however drive in '4th' with Overdrive off. For instance, I'll drive and go through the gears regularly up until 35 or so mph when it should shift into 4th, the RPMs then just climb unless overdrive is off.

So is it what I think it, the gear being trashed? explanations?

It's a band not a gear in the common meaning. Once it starts to slip it just burns up. I would have it repaired before it starts to disintegrate.
