My Step Dad and I got into it today about stupid shit about my transmission, and he said that if my car was put in second gear (transmission is an automatic) that if I floored it, it would shift down, but I said no it doesnt shift down and then he said yes it does you dont know what you're talking about so I said alright so we went out driving and I put it in second and floored it and it was so slow and then he like slams it into 1st and it revs up and goes. SOO my question is, is my transmission supposed to shift down even when it is placed in 2nd gear? Because he says it is but it doesnt and he says its because my transmission is fubed up is that true? or I am just right and my transmission is okay and my step dad shouldnt get pissed over stupid shit?

your dad seems like a tool, but yes most car with still downshift into first when placed into "2". does your trans slip? if not just tell him to fuck off your trans is fine.

I have an auto too. The number that the gear selector is on doesn't nessesarily mean thats the gear its in....but the all the higher the gears will go....so if you're at a dead stop and you have the shifter in "2" the you'll start out in first and it will shift into second like normal but it will hold it in second and not let it go into third. but it can shift down.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

This is a feature that my '66 Mustang w/C4 auto, my wifes old '93 Mustang LX 2.3L auto and her current '08 Escape auto have. Since I started messing with cars back in '75, I have seen this on many Ford products over the years from '72 LTD's with the FMX auto to Pinto's. This enables you to start out in snowy/slick conditions without the rear wheels spinning wildly. It works very well. Your step father is familiar with GM's and other makes that don't have this function.

Your trans is functioning as designed. No problem. Use as directed in your owners manual if you have it.

you gotta put it on the big dot!

Wasn't aware that they did this. I'm more familiar w/ the gm transmissions and the newer ones will shift out of 1st even if manually selected in some vehicles but they always just go 1st-2nd-hold if you put it in 2 or L2, etc.

This. It's always done this for me on 3 separate transmissions..a stock 96, a rebuilt 96, and an 02 4r70w. It stays in whatever gear I have it in whether it's 1st or 2nd.

Both of our Explorers do exactly like you say, 2nd gear is 2nd gear only, not 1st + 2nd

All ford trannies do that as far as i know. My bronco, f150, e150 work van all did it when i had each of them. My wifes new escape does it now as also my friends expedition. Second gear starting is fords idea of helping when the road is slick due to weather or what not.

just confirming the latter......1st is locked in first, second locks it in second
