i took off my shifter, i found that a nut came loose on the shifter bar. i tightened it (i have a hurst shifter). so, i tightened the bolt and tightened the shifter back down and shifted it, it shifted fine. i decide to take it for a test drive, it drove just fine. still lost third though. i decide to try 4th...it actually went into gear and drove. so i have 4th. the problem is, when i shifted into 4th, it LOCKED in 4th. i put it in 1st, it won't go forward. 2nd, won't go forward (the engine bogs when the clutch catches, but the car fails to go forward). i put it in third. now, when i put it in third, it should act like it's in neutral. but it doesn't. it bogs just like first and second. i put it in reverse, it bogs and won't move. i put it back in 4th, it moves. i put it in neutral, it moves. when i move the shifter side to side, it feels like it hits a wall, and i gotta wiggle the shifter back and forth to get it to go side to side.

what is the problem? shifting fork?

Sounds like it might be time for a rebuild to me. Not sure though, sounds like a pretty serious problem. Sorry that I can't help.
