I am getting ready to replace the U-joint on my mustang. I have a few questions....

- Do I need a U-Joint tool or do you guys think i can use a Hammer/socket/vice method fine?

- Should i replace the u-joints with a Grease fitting model or will this effect balance?

Hammer/socket/vice will work. It needs to be a pretty big vise though

I didn't even need a vice. After pulling out the clips, I put a socket that was bigger than the ujoint cap on the ground (open end up obviously) with the driveshaft on top of it, pounded the other end of the ujoint with a deep socket and a hammer and popped it right out.

Took maybe 5 minutes to change both of them.

Luckily you didn't run into problems. Below is what I had to deal with. Do you see the black powder substance? At some point back in the 90's those were needle bearings. A few sockets now rest in pieces

I did mine last week. Vice works, but I used a BIG vice on a workbence and almost lifted the entire workbench trying to press the old ones out. It's all doable, they may just be very stuck.

So what do you guys think about installing u-joints with a grease fitting?

If you have a grease fitting thats fine, make sure you grease them constantly, make sure you dont put too much in and youll be fine. They will still fail given time, but should last longer.
