So I got the valve covers off, replacing those gaskets, and am still diagnosing that noise from the motor.

We spun the motor over by hand when we had it apart, and am wondering if I should do so now? Will it matter with the valve covers on/off? Just an 18 MM socket/breaker bar and turn clockwise right..? And just listen for noise..?

Anyway, I went to tap on the cam caps to be sure they're torqued down, and after I tapped them I took a 10MM socket, and gave just a little bit of power and they turned a little. I know I had these torqued to 80 Ft Lbs before..so I guess Ill get a torque wrench and double check that.

You most likely won't hear any noises turning the engine over by hand, unless something is big time broke.

I would put a torque wrench on those bolts. Don't do it with a wrench. 80lbs of torque is not much, overtightening could lead to a broken bolt.

Good idea, a broken cam retaining bolt is a disaster waiting to happen.

Well, tried using a torque wrench on the cam cap bolts, and read up and saw that itll take anywhere from 71-90ish ft lbs I believe..went to tighten one with the torque wrench, it never clicked, felt like the bolt just wasnt getting any tighter. Finally the bolt snapped in two, luckilly i got it out after taking off the cam cap. WTF.

I measured it, by using the torque wrench and put it down to 25-30 ft lbs, and it clicked there, but wouldnt click around 40, so I thought, damn these things must really not be torqued down correctly..but it didnt feel like they were getting much tighter till one snapped..so I backed off the few that I torqued down a bit more.

you have them way to tight!!!!!!! cam caps are tourqed to 70 to 105 inch pounds!!!!http://www.allfordmustangs.com/Detailed/651.shtml

the caps being way to tight could be putting excess pressure on the camshaft preventing it from rotating properly. back them off and re tourqe them to about 85 in lbs. and see if that doesnt fix the problem.

(80ft lbs on a 10mm bolt could stretch bad i would check your threads before you torque them back down

hope this helps.

and to convert this to ft lbs go no more than 9 ft lbs.........105in lbs =8.75ft lbs

this is why you werent getting a click on your wrench the bolt was prolly stretching!!!!

the bolts themselves can be bought at any hardware store as long as the thread pitch and size is the same.

If they are supposed to be torqued to 70-105 inch lbs and you torqued them to 80ftlbs, REPLACE ALL THE BOLTS!!!!!! They are stretched and are weakened.

Also get a inch lbs torque wrench. DO NOT do that conversion. Ft lbs torque wrenches do not read accuately at anything below 15ft lbs.

I dont know if that was the problem, I think I may have just caused something else, by torquing them down too much. I backed off the ones that I torqued..

Im going to call the ford dealership, order the cam cap bolts..and I need a valve cover bolt too. Ugh.

Where can I get an In/lb wrench? Does autozone/etc rent them?
