upstream downstream?

does anyone know the difference between the downstream o2 sensor and the upstream one when i got my car it only had two on there and well i went to the auto part store and ther showing two different ones and there it a twenty dollar difference witch one should i get?

yea thats what i though but it keeps coming up that there is two different ones i have tried a couple of stores...

The guessing reference to up and down stream may be because the V6 had the OBDII PCM and may have had 4 O2 sensors.

Upstream sensors are before the cat (as already mentioned) but they also have a heating element in the sensor,
making them a little bit more expensive than downstream sensors (not equiped on 94-95 5.0). If a car has only 1
sensor per bank of cylinders, they're usually upstream sensors. Auto Parts stores will carry a listing for downstream
sensors on 94-95 5.0s, but your local Ford dealership won't. And X2 on buying OEM ford O2 sensors.. mine lasted until
115K when one started crapping out, so i replaced them as a pair.
