Valve clearance / Emissions issues with new setup

So I got a slammin' deal on Craigslist, $300 for:
  • GT40p heads
  • .600 lift springs
  • B303 cam
  • FRPP 1.72 rockers

I'm worried the B cam and the big rockers are going to cause valve clearance or emissions issues (I live right next to DC in VA). I've seen guys get pretty good results with 1.72s and the stock cam, so is it worth it to even try and mess with the B cam? I'm not trying to run 12s or anything, just want more get-up-and-go around town.

Also what else should I do to round out this build? Obviously getting an explorer/GT40 intake once I find one, already have a 65mm TB.

Thanks for the help!

vlv springs for the heads.
IDK if you'll have PTV issues but I'd put some play-dough on the piston and bolt 1 head up without the gasket. Rotate everything through by hand then remove the head and ck for clearance.

Yeah, I was planning on doing it once I got in there. Do I have to do all the cylinders or just number 1?

B cams are a 20+ year old design and some cause smog test issues.

I think I heard that GT40p heads run out of lift when the valve retainer hits the valve guide but that might be Chevy Vortec heads. Any way, it might take more than springs to get to 0.600" so check everything.

Check your springs for seat pressure at installed height and coil bind first, that will determine the best cam, then make sure the heads aren't limiting your lift, then buy a new cam and sell the b cam.

Throw in a three angle valve job and pocket port job for best effect.

So I did some more research and the B cam seems a little choppy for me. While I'd love to sound like I'm boiling tar at every stop light, I am concerned about gas mileage and driveability.

I'm thinking about just sticking with the stock cam for now or maybe trading the B cam for something smaller and a little more agreeable.

Basically I want a nice, mild cam that is an improvement over stock. Any suggestions?

Just stick with the stock cam it ain't worth it with these iron heads. With the 1.7 roller rockers, the heads and a cobra/gt40 intake should make enough horsepower for what you want and be sort of a sleeper with the stock idle. and no need for a tune just timing adjustments and i think the stock 19lb injectors will be enough also.
BTW, my uncle has this same combination on his 86 capri and he's running 13's on street tires so yours will be pretty quick also.

Yeah that's what I'm after. I know guys love getting into the cam debate but frankly the car sounds good as is, will sound even better once I finish the exhaust, and I don't want to have to rebuild the whole da*n thing in a year when I need to get emissions done again.
