I think i have decided to shave my keyhole. I was wondering if there are any precautions to welding on a car like unplugging the batter or ECU? things like that?

Some people will say you can damage stuff but I've been welding on cars for 15 years and have never had any damage done. That being said, lol, unplug your battery.

If you're asking this question, that means you don't know what you're doing, why don't you get a pro to do it.

If you don't listen to my suggestion make sure you bend/contour your template and spot weld slow or you'll shrink the panel and cause a lot more work than you'll expect.

Nerd is right, Im actually IICAR certificed in structual welding and Collision REfinsihing, and you should at least disconnect the battery cables from the vehicle and go from there. Depending on how close you are to teh ECU/PCM you could disconnect it ie if its on the inner fender of a car and your welding on teh fender or around it. Then it would be a good idea just to remove. But doors are fine. Also alot of the paneling on the doors can be up to 27 gauge metal or sometimes a little thicker. Its not easy to weld thin stuff, and its harder to weld it accurately and sucessfully. Good Luck

TAKE YOUR TIME!!! You def do not want to warp the metal. Besides unplugging the battery which is standard practice, hook your ground close to your work. The current looks for the fastest way out per say. Not saying hook it right behind what you're doing but hook it somewhere on the door and not, for example, on the tailpipe. But hey it can't hurt to unplug the ECU

I know how to weld the thin metal, i just was worried about the ecu and screwing up my computer. I want to weld up the keyhole because the clear is pealing. I was planning on having my body guy either do it or help me along and do it. Does anyone happen to know where the ECU is on a new edge?

yea, wheres teh ECU on a 96-98 as well? because im thinking of welding a hole we drilled in my engine bay closed again... this winter. my uncle welds, so he will do it... i was just unaware of ECU problems... i would think welding takes place quite often in body shops, and i cant imagine them undoing the ECU stuff on EVERY car, ya know? (jsut sayin'... they might... i dont work at a body shop... so i dont know these things.)

unplug the battery, and remember nice short tac's, and go opposites of each other. dont build up to much heat in one area, or you will get some major warpage goin on. but really i would suggest taking it to a pro. if you dont know how to weld, and by that i mean some solid welding experience, let a pro do it. theres a lot more to these things than "professional" back yard welders think.

i wouldn't worry about it..... as long as your ground is good

if you've ever taken your car to an exhaust shop its most likely been welded on before without disconnecting the battery.... did a complete core support without disconnecting it, car never had a single issue

how would the current from the welder get into the wiring harness in the first place?

i agree with El_diablo. I highly doubt the exhaust shop i took my car to last month disconnected the batt! lol.

Sxynerd - never noticed that detail about your car. looks great!

i dont know how a muffler shop does it, but when i used to do semi trailer floor repairs with an alum mig, i had these clamps, one went to the positive, and one went to the negative and it protected the battery, and electrical system. i cant for the life of me remember what the heck it was called. but yes, welding can screw up stuff, like the ecu, and battery. we have had it happen at our shop, it destroyed some sensors in the refer system for a semi trailer, that's why we had to take precautions. you may be able to weld on it with no problems, but there is possibilities of problems, it simply is not worth the risk.

my uncle ruined his garage door opener because he was welding in his garage... so i know odd shiz happens, i just dont know how to protect myself without taking my car completely apart. lol.

also, (i work in the transportation business) if you transport a transformer into a power plant, you have to use jack and rolls to place them, because without shutting down the power plat (for hours) you cant use a crane to lift and place the transformer. The crane's computers will get all messed up inside the power plant if both are operational at the same time.
