What can be causing my rear end to leak?

The car has been sitting in the same spot in the garage and not driven since March. It was last moved just before that on a flat bed from the previous garage to where it is now. Before it was moved there was no leak but now there is. It appears to be leaking where the drive shaft connects to the rear end, its not coming from the cover but appears to be right where the yoke is at the rear end.

I'm let Chris make the nasty comment about your rearend leaking.
There is a seal on the pinion. unfortunately you'll have to take the gear out to replace the seal.

Thanks perverts :)

So the ring and pinion gear need to come out, remove the driveshaft, and put in a new seal on the pinion gear and a new crush collar?

yup. how many miles are on the rear end? you might think about a rebuild kit while your in there.

I was looking in my haynes manual and it did not say to remove the ring and pinon gear to replace the pinion seal. It just said to remove the driveshaft and remove the seal and pound a new one back in. Am I missing something?

The rear end is only a few years old, I doubt it needs a rebuild kit already. It has a ford Racing LSD for 31 spline axles.

I had the same problem 2/3 years ago. Like others stated the pinion seal just gets old after a while, most of these cars are 10-17yrs old so most of these things have to be replaced if you want to keep on driving it. Mine leaked on my garage floor during the winter around the coldest month because metal expands and vise versa so it leaks.

Make sure you dont drive it too low or you will destroy your bearings if there isn't enough fluid protecting them.

this is true.. you dont have to pull the gears. just the d/s, yoke, yoke nut and seal. just check preload with a in/lb torque wrench.

If I put the nut back on with the same amout of turns as it took to come off and it the same position it was on is there a need to check preload? Looking at trying to not have to buy an inch lb tq wrench
