What could cause a tire to do this?

Not mine, its my sisters tire off her 2006 honda civic. Its the rear tire.

It was making loud noises in the rear. The dealership said the tires were fine and sent them (her and her b/f) on their way. This happened after a trip to NH right before they got back to the apartment.

when there is wear like that there is more than one problem. the fact that it was on the rear makes it a little more bizzar...

that looks like failing shock + excessive toe....

Bearings? the tire was properly off camber due to excessive bearing play or something..

I doubt thsi would happened like that if it was just out of round...

Looks scary.

That could be a good possibility.. The fact that the tire does not appear to have excessive diagonal swipping makes me think that
the shocks are still in ok shape... The tire would have to be leaning in quite a bit, for a bad shock to only affect the inside like that..
I would suggest 2 new rear tires, and have a 4 wheel align performed.. The 06 Civics have adj rear toe, but not camber, so let's
hope somethings not bent in the rear to cause the camber to move negative... Also, if you have a document from Honda that
says that they inspected and passed the tires, they should pay for it. It is a legal binding document...

maybe something to make the wheel wobble or shake in a certain pattern? and like Chris said, that has to be two problems working together.
idk, that has to be the strangest abnormal tire wear i've ever seen.

The car was first brought in b/c of the noise coming from the rear. At the time the tires looked ok. After the out of state trip thats how it looked when they got back. I would assume the wear was already starting quite a bit and the long trip wore it down to the cords

def need to get the rear checked out. the front would be fixed possibly by a simple alignment. the rear maybe fixed that way but not as likely

Id say something is probly bent in that corner. The rubbed inside says bad camber, the splotching of chord showing says bad toe. has she hit/ran over anything?

if there is a noise coming from the rear, take that tire jack it up and spin the tire and put you hand on the spring, or control arm. if you feel vibration then that is a bad bearing. if it is loose then you can move the tire up and down, both is bad.Is her civic lowered or anything? if the tires were cupped then that would cause a noise also. either way honda did not do there job.

ok, well you can still do the check and that will tell you if it is a bad bearing. a tire doesnt wear like that on purpose. what does the other tire look like on the otherside?

I'm willing to bet that the noise she was hearing was excessive tire noise in the rear... That can sound like a failing wheel
bearing, especially if the alignment is knocked out considerably in the rear. But, like i said, if Honda didn't mention
anything like "you should look into getting rear tires, or the alignment checked, there is some inside wear", then that particular
dealership has no business touching cars.

The car is dogtracking, running sideways and seems like it might have worn out rear shocks. 4wheel alignment and check for bent suspension parts in rear.

The tire on the other side is starting to or was starting to do the same thing as well as one of the front ones. Thats what she was just told at the dealership. They said they cold replace all 4 tires and do an alignment for $650 lol.

This is not a hole in the wall dealership. Its big name brand dealership and its an actual Toyota Dealer

Sometimes you'll get a moron working on your car. Even at a dealership. Regardless, 650 for four tires and an alignment. An alignment is normally around 60-80 bucks, so 550 for tires, we'll say. What size tire? That seems expensive, Hondas are mostly 15" wheels I thought.

Be aware that if something is bent its gonna be very hard to get it aligned right,

The Honda civics have independent rear toe adjustments, It can't dog track.... Dog tracking is most commonly on
Rear wheel/4wd trucks and especially vans, where the rear axle has shifted, causing the Thrust angle to point to either side.
Like this: | Eng |
|
|
/--^--/
If they left the Truck like this, the steering wheel would be crooked, because the front wheels are trying to compensate for the
rear wheels wanting to push the car to the left.

Then, when the Truck goes in to have a 4 wheel alignment performed, since you can't change the thrust angle on a Solid
rear axle (short of a big effin chain and a F450 yankin on it), they align the front wheels to the rear, so that the steering wheel is
straight. So, (in exaggerated form, the Truck now looks like this:
/ Eng /
|
|
/--^--/
So the steering wheel is now straight, No tire wear, and the Truck drives straight down the road, only the Ass-end is kicked out to the right,
which is where the term "dog-track" comes from.... One whole week of Hunter Engineerings Alignment class filled my head
with quite a bit of knowledge.
