What is the purpose of the coolant temperature sensor?

Hey everybody,
I recently changed my coolant temperature sensor and just wanted to know what it actually does?

Also does it have anything to do with my 'low coolant' light being on?
any ifo would be great thanks!

Try disconnecting the battery for a few minutes and re-connect it. That will reset the PCM, might clear the code.

a few months ago MIne came on. When I looked to check it, it the hrns had rubbed the serpentine belt and wore a hole through it. Maybe check to make sure yours has not done the same.

The ECT is located passenger side front of engine on the water pump housing that goes to the heater core. It's function is to provide temperature info to the PCM for fuel management functions such as extra fuel for cold start, idle, etc. The low coolant sensor is in the overflow bottle and is for that function only. The dash gauge temperature sending unit is on the driver's side just below the distributor. It only supplies a signal to the gauge unit.
