I was going to move my car out from the snow today b/c my moms fiance just packed his sh** and drove to Tennessee and the car i DD is his, he took the title with him so i figure he'll be coming back to get it at some point. He can have it, it's a piece, but that's beside the point. So i'm trying to get the car out digging the snow away and such i get in and am trying to as gently as possible get it to move because our driveway heaves during the inter and the rear tires are basically in a hole with a little snow and puddles beneath them. So i'm being as gentle as possible but my clutch was in the process of dying so i had to get it up to like 3000 rpm before it would start to roll, whenever the tires started spinning i would let off and i was really just trying to get it to rock back and forth to get out while someone pushed. I did this for about 5 minutes then all of a sudden i hear a thunk and the car dies, won't get out of gear, and won't start. I think I killed the clutch. I know i probably did something really stupid but with the things happening right now i've been stressed out and i probably should have thought it through more before trying to move it.. Anyway, I'll have it moved to a shop and if it isn't worth it to fix whatever happened i'm going to buy a new car. It's no big deal, I got this car for $4000 less than i was looking to spend and (luckly) haven't put much into it. I've been eyeing 2 stangs and want to know what you guys think of them and if the prices are good.

I'm not sure how much it's going to cost for the clutch, I can't do it so I'm, going to need to bring it to a shop. If it's as much or more than the car is or will be worth in the near future then i don't see the point as the car still needs a new hood, paint, and more body work. I can't do any of that on my own. If it's all going to end up almost as much or as much as a car thats in better condition and has been taken care of better (this one drove like it had been taken care of on the test drive and on the way home, sat being started and moved every week for the end of last winter then started acting up like someone had really been beating the snot out of it when i started driving it) then why should i bother dumping big money into it?

I dont understand what you expected when you bought the car. Unless you buy a vintage car, or something rare.. really there will be no return investment. If you sell the car now, as it is, will you loose money? If so, your already in the hole obviously. Buying another car won't fix the negative portion, nor will it guarantee that the exact same issue will come again. If you sell your car every time something breaks that you feel you can't do, you don't need to be worrying about money. Trading out of cars is costly, no matter what you do to set aside the cost.

This doesnt make sense. Your buying a new car because your clutch went out? IF you want a cheap fix. Log on your local mustang club website. You will find someone on there willing to fix your car for some $$$ and beer+pizza =] I found a guy from my local site to fix my clutch for $220 i think.. maybe it was $175, but i dont remember.


If you really set on a new car. Dont get another sn95 when nothing is wrong with yours really.. just get a new edge. It seems your looking for something different if your getting rid of your car for a small problem.

I'm not set on anything. And i was never planning on making any profit off this car. I guess I'm just not wording stuff right. Does it sound like it's really only the clutch? It's stuck in gear I can't budge the gear stick, it can't start, and i heard a big thud and jerk when it stalled. I think it may be more than the clutch but this is the first time i've ever been in this situation with a car. That's why I'm asking for advice.

Sorry if i sound like i have an attitude or anything, a lot has been going on. I don't mean to sound like it.

Unless im miss reading this he's saying he's scared its going to coast an arm and a leg to fix his stang and asking at what point should he cut his loses and move on. If I'm right , that is ultimately up to you. Every one has a breaking point , or in my case is just stupid lol. I've been known more than once to stick way to much money in to a car simply bc I like it. But I've also been verry lucky with trading up on cars. Worst case your tranny is trashed. Look on craigslist find one cheep ask a few buddies to help you or have a shop do it. Shouldn't be to pricy be any means if you do it and its not that hard. So lets say for 400 bucks you have a running stang again , beats 4k+ for another one dosent it?I'm not saying thats what it is simply making a point. If you ask me it really comes down to what you want to do. Look some what long tearm , is this a car you plain to build or want to keep for awhile? Do you want something diffrent? What you would spend on a nice sn95 would get yours running and have cash left over...
Really up to you to deside. Helpful tip tho , don't freak out till you know whats wrong. Got to remember our cars are only getting older , stuff wears out. its not always for the worst and gives you an excuse to upgrade stuff if thats your thing. Just my .02 hope it helps

I'd fix it. If you were closer I'd make a deal with you and fix it on the side for some cash. But your a ways away. Duff would be more suitable for that

All_ford_fun is right on the money. Like i said, I'm not going to have another car to drive shortly because my moms x-fiance just walked out and he owns the car i'm driving now. This is a problem because A, he has the title and B, as far as we know he has no plans of sending my mom money for his insurance, that's a problem because if my mother splits the policy the grand prix is basically uninsured and i won't be able to drive it, I'm going to call around and have the stang towed to a shop on Monday as my normal mechanic doesn't do clutch/trans, I just want to be prepared so that if it ends up ridiculously expensive I can just snatch up a new one. I just want to be prepared if i need to get a new one. Plus mine wouldn't be the best daily, no TC, no ABS, no defrost (sucks to not have that in the cold lol) But if it isn't crazy expensive to have it fixed it's no question that it'll just be fixed.

I feel for ya , went down damn near the same road. If I were closer id come n swap it for the price of lunch. I can't see it costing more than 1k and thats leaveing alot of room... I haven't had a clutch replaced in so long ,I've done them mysealf for the past 11 years. 600 is probly about right.

If it ends up that i really F'd something or multiple things in the drivetrain up at what point do you guys think i should cut my losses and look for a new stang? Keep in mind it still probably needs like 2-2.5k in paint and bodywork. Like I said it was a different situation when i bought the car and i had time and something else to drive if this needed to be sent off for work or paint. So at what point cash wise would you cut this one loose and move on?

When my clutch went out in my 95, I couldn't get it out of second gear. Sounds like just a clutch which is honestly, won't last forever. Fix it. Swapping to another used Mustang is just swapping to another set of problems you don't know anything about.

Possibly clutch and or bearing retainer hence the "pop" but it could be more. You need to have the damages assesed and then go from there. Personally, I wouldnt spend more than a 3'rd of what I paid for the car to fix it. For example take my car, I paid 5,400 4 years ago with 85kmiles. Over the course of those years I have out about 3 grand into the car fixing/upgrading things. The car now has an unofficial 170k(because of gears and no speedcal) been through 2 rears, 2 clutch's, 2 strut and shock/spring combos and I am forced to putt around in her for the winter becasue its my DD. I'm tired of spending money on the car and since things are starting to wear out again I'm going to cut my losses, sell it for less than half of what I paid and start fresh with something else...more likely something thats more comfortable as a DD.

duh09 I wasn't telling him to just go out and buy a used tranny , simply making a point that theres options to consider. If it were to coast over 1500 I'd personally part it out or sell it if its as bad as you make it sound. From what I can see it looks pretty good tho. Like i said before , it dosent matter what any of us say its really up to you and what will work best for you.
