OK, I guess this has been done to death a few times but searching through various forums has got me more confused!
I want to replace the clutch on my '99 GT which is stock and will probably remain so. I don't want to spend too much on a clutch but at the same time, I don't want to end up with some cheap and nasty thing that barely lasts a year! The clutches I've been looking at so far are:
A Sachs kit at RockAuto for $109
An SVE Mongoose kit at LateModelRestoration for $160
The Fidanza 1.0 kit at CJPonyParts for $188.
I'm also considering the Ford Racing kit which is right at the top end of what I want to spend (cheapest I've seen is $210 at LMR but then I'd have to add on the Pilot bearing and tool that are included in the other kits).
Has anyone had any experience of the above clutches? Are they any good? Can you recommend any others in this price range? The Mongoose sounds good but I assume it must be new to the market as I'm struggling to find any reviews. I guess the Fidanza should be ok but what about the Sachs?
Also, I've seen a lot of different opinions on the Throw out bearing. Some saying the original Ford one is no good, others saying you must stick to OEM and various other recommendations. Are the TOBs with the above kits likely to be any good or should I buy that separately (and if so, which should I buy)?
The car has lasted 11 years and 43,000 miles on the original clutch.
One other thing - is resurfacing the flywheel (or putting a new one in) a must do when changing the clutch or should it be ok as it is?
Thanks,
Steve
