Rob, I thought TFS had fixed the bad guides problem? ...that it was related to earlier production heads with inferior guide materials.

Im pretty sure that if TF had issues w/ their heads chewing up valve guides in this day in age it would be well known and they would not be selling heads. The TF heads did have issues very early on as paul said but that was quite awhile ago now.

So who do you recomend for a cam?

Ed Curtis can grind you a nice cam.

Or just buy one of the bigger, more popular Comp or Anderson cams.

if you are on a "budget" it is hard to beat the edelbrock heads. i have them on the 289 in my 66 and i would do it all over again. if you have the $ the afr heads are hard to beat and they have a lifetime warranty (not that you should need it) but its something to consider

i had 165s, loved them which is why i picked up the 205s.

Paul...you're probably correct.
Like previously mentioned..if they still chewed up guides, they would be having big problems. I think the problems were really solved when TFS was purchased by Summit Racing.

I think the big issues were with the cast iron twisted wedge heads.

Can you guys help explain cams a little to me? What will I need to know to get the custom-grind that you guys are recomending? What should I go for and go away from?

If your intentions are to go with a custom cam, Call Ed Curtis (Flowtechinduction.com) or Jay Allen (camshaftinnovations.com)

They're going to ask you everything and then they'll design a cam around your responses. I would wait and get a cam when you are done with everything. No need to do the job twice unless cost is not a huge issue for you.

There are also good quality off the shelf/pre-cut cams that make very good power. It all depends on what you want..

A shelf cam is definitley going to be cheaper.

it is not that I own a money tree or anything but I am willing to save the money needed to get good enough equipment to know it will last. I have 15 yrs of auto sound and security installation experience but very little under the hood and wanting to learn.

Well as Paul said, you can get a good quality off the shelf cam or you can go custom. If you're thinking you're gonna rebuild anytime soon I would hold off.

The TFS Stage 1 cam will work perfect with those heads for now. Then if you decide to rebuild to a 306 or do a stroker, then I would go custom.

I have a longterm goal to go forced induction eventually but this will be it for some time right now.

I run the TFS TW heads with 1.6RR's and the TFS Stage 1 cam with a P1SC Procharger kit on my `89 and it's a great combo IMO.

good to know and exactly what I was wanting to hear.

I though the 94-95 computers were a little touchy as to which cam would work.

It's hit and miss. My car is running surprisingly well without a computer tune with the trickflow cam but I hear others can barely get it to idle with the same set-up. Every car acts different from what I have seen and heard.

probably will go with trick flow with the $300 off sale. I am waiting to hear back from someone else that might be able to get a better deal but otherwise will probably order them to day or tomorrow.

No one will have a better deal than Summit.

Summit Racing owns Trick Flow Specialties.
