Why is my car hesitating?

I've got a 96 GT with some basic bolt-ons (o/r x-pipe, flowmaster cat-back, intake, spec clutch). Sometimes when I plant the gas from a roll or dump the clutch from a dig, it hesitates, hiccups a few times, and catches back up. It almost feels like a misfire, but the MIL light isnt on, so thats probably not the cause. I did notice that I have a high-pitched whine coming from what sounds like the fuel pump (stock). Could the pump be going out and Im just not getting the fuel I need? Id appreciate any help

first step is to check your coil packs, the change in load on them sometimes makes them kick out a little bit

mine used to do something similar, but it was mostly on the highway. say im cruising at like 2k rpms in 5th, and i want to speed up a little, when i hit the gas, it used to hesitate and "misfire" (not really a misfire, but it felt like multiple misfires). after i got my car tuned, that bogging/hesitating/misfiring thingy went away. they adjusted the timing in the tune, so im thinking thats what fixed it for me.

My car did that exact same thing when I first put in this motor. Mine was just a dirty injector problem though and eventually I ended up changing the plugs/wires and it stopped.

Start with the basic's..... Fuel filter. A clogged f/f will do the same. If you havent changed it in awhile or you have ran your car close to empty a few times it could have some trash in it. Thats where I would start.

yup, i thought so too, but after i cleaned the injectors, replaced spark plugs (with iridiums), replaced plug wires, replaced coils (just for the hell of it....i wanted MSD ones :coolsmiley:), fuel filter, and it still kept doing it, i thought it was normal. finally got it tuned and the spark adjusted, and it went away. my timing went from 14* at 2500rpms to 21*, lol.

could be as well. like he said, start with the basics, and if that doesnt fix it, then start looking at the more expensive options.

Ive checked most of the basic stuff you guys have said. I recently changed the fuel filter, so it shouldnt be dirty. The plug wires arent even a year old yet, and the plugs looked fine the last time I pulled them out. I cleaned the TB and MAF about a month ago. Since all of this checked out, I'm still leaning towards the fuel pump, not to mention it whines like a siv even at idle.

If I were to get a handheld tuner like an SCT piece or an Xcalibrator, would that help? Give me your opinions.

well if it is the fuel pump going bad, then no, the tuner wont help. if its like my situation where they can adjust the spark to fix the hesitation., then yes, the tuner will help.
