Hey yall, I am trying to decide between getting a xcal 3 from Don at lasota racing, or getting 3.73 gears. I emailed Don and he said to expect between 10-15 rwhp gain from the xcal using a 93 octane tune, but because my car is a automatic it would shift much faster as well. Overall, I'm just wanting help deciding which would help me most performance-wise. My car is stock 98 Gt, auto, with flowmasters.
Thanks a lot
(P.S. no I dont want 4.10's I need good highway gas mileage)

Get the gears, and save the x-cal for when you're going with some sort of FI

I'd definitely get FRPP 3.73's.
I had FRPP 4.10's in my last mustang and it felt like I gained
forty horsepower replacing the stock 3.27's.
You should hold off on the Xcal 3 until you get more mods.

i would honestly say both. i know thats not what you want to hear, but if you dont get the handheld you will need a speedcal. which will run you $100. so eventually when you do go to a handheld you will just eliminate the speedcal anyway....just something to think about

Actually I'm pretty sure for 3.73's all I would need is a new speedo gear. I thought it was if you go higher than 3.73's (like 3.90's or 4.10"s)then you need the speedcal. But yeah both would be ideal. :dontknow:

So it appears yall think 3.73's would lower my quarter mile more than the Xcal?

im almost 100% sure any gear change and your speedo will be off. Hopefully someone can chime in. Oh and yeah, you will definately pick up better et's with the gear than the handheld

The FRPP 3.73's will lower your quarter mile times indeed.I dropped three tenths in the quarter mile after I installed FRPP 4.10's in my old mustang with alot of trips to the tracks.Make sure you get a Dallas Mustang speedcal to correct your speedometer or you will put alot of unwanted miles on your mustang. In the future get a Xcal 3 with a custom dyno tune after you install more mods if you plan on modding your mustang more.

Ide go for gears all the way, my jump up from 2.73's to 3.73's was awesome. The downside is that if you buy a handheld tuner you will not be able to change your speedometer on a 98 and lower year mustang, it only tunes the speedometer on 99+ models. so you will have to buy the speedcal to get your speedometer dead on.

your going to feel ALOT more difference in the 3.73's.

I have a 98 GT, Auto as well, and i had 3.73's, and now have 4.10's, and i bought the Xcal 3 before anything.

I had my car Dyno Tuned bone stock, just b/c i won some free dyno time in a raffle, and the custom tune only picked up 10-11hp. But when i had the 3.73's installed, it was like having a whole different car. Loved it so much I went to 4.10's.

and yes you need a speedcal and the matching trans gear, or you get more miles on your Odometer, honestly, i bought a speedcal when i got 4.10's, my car had 135k on the Odo allready when i got the 3.73's, so it doesnt really matter to me, car has been paid for since 02', and i never plan on getting rid of it. Like seriously, ever. But i got the speedcal for the 4.10's b/c the speedo was WAY off. Like 10mph off at hgihway speeds.

I think gears will give a bigger SOTP feel but the handheld tuner is a must for the auto's

a generic 93 octane tune will make a big differance combined with the bumped shift pressure

Will the higher pressure harm the tranny in any way ?
