They are A/C related. As to what they do I cannot say as my A/C knowledge isn’t the greatest. To clean them up you would have to drain the A/C system and disconnect that line. It’s a long one though. More trouble than it’s worth in my opinion if you are doing it yourself.

I wonder what that crap (coating?) is on them? And can it be removed/cleaned off? Or is it necessary ie, has a reason for being on there?

I have no straight answer for that, but if I were to guess, it is an anti rust coating, as if that line were to rust through and make pinholes then the refrigerant would leak into the atmosphere. Big no no.

That’s just an educated guess though. All I remember is that it is a long line that has to be finessed out of the engine bay if you wanna remove it.

Thx, John. What kind of filters are they? And why won’t I be able to access them (confused)?

I believe they are cast into the line, so they are not a separate piece that is attached. This is what I remember when I was messing around with my A/C delete.

They're essentially brazed on likely with silver solder. They are permanent, can't be messed with. Inside it's a filter/desiccant. Doesn't hurt to sand and paint them if that's your only issue.

If that’s my only option, then that sounds fine. I have regular and fine 0000 on hand. I’ll see if either works but I suspect I’ll need something more abrasive.

I'd start with a damp rag and barkeepers' friend before trying sandpaper.

Not sandpaper, 0000 steel wool. I did a bit already and it took off the top layer fairly easily. Hard parts will be getting all of it (tight reach) then applying paint or putting some kind of coating on it.

Here’s a pic of the quickie shot with the steel wool. The pipe between the brake fluid reservoir and the coil is smooth now (don’t know if you can tell), but the old-looking stuff is gone. The pipe is so smooth, I’m not sure paint or any coating for that matter would stick(?)
