1998 - Broken Odometer

Can somebody please let me know what I have to do to repair a broken odometer on the 98 GT? Theres a post up about a 94 but the back of that gauge cluster is different. :TY:

actually I'm going through the same problem, only my Odo has gone yet just my trip. i am also fortunate to have a bastard year gt, (98), and Ive been told that there is a driven gear in the back, and when it decides to give up its usually the teeth are stripped or just broke. they told me the gear itself is around 25 to 30 dollars, although i assume that the gear is connected to both the trip and Odo but I'm not quite sure, i hope i helped

I cant believe it costs that much for a tiny plastic gear. I looked through a pull a part junkyard with no luck. 2 Things though. If it is the gear, how do you get that plastic sheet off the back - the one with all the electric lines running through it. It seems to be stuck under those silver things.

Also - a weird observation. I change my own oil and I noticed that the odometer is stuck exactly 3000 miles before the mileage I wrote down on my sticker to change next. Now either I hit something under there some how and messed up the connection, OR it was broken before I did the oil and just didnt realize it. Strange though.

Do these work for the tach as well? My tach spins all the way around sometimes.

you don't pull the plastic off the back, you take out the 8 torx screws that hold the lens/cover on. the you remove the one more torx screw that holds the center gauges in place. then pull out the outer sets of gauges (battery, fuel level, engine temp, and oil pres.). then pull out the center set of gauges. the odometer is held in by 3 5/16 (i think) screws. unplug it from the speedometer motor and remove the odometer motor. swap the gear which is in the center and put it back together in reverse order. that's all there is to it.
i just replaced mine back in may if you're wondering how i know.

as for if this works for the tach the answer is no, it doesn't.
