Just bought this 2004 GT conv. When you push the switch you can hear the motor in back run but top don't go up or down. It will by hand but not by electric? any ideas? think motor might be bad even though makes noise?

Maybe check the fuse first, that's the easiest first step. Do you have an owner's manual? It shows you fuse locations.

Sadly this is a convertible mustang plague. Either the hoses or hose connections crap out or the lift cylinders crap out. If you are lucky, the cylinders just crapped out and need to be rebuilt. If you are unlucky and the hose or connections crapped out, you officially have oil puddled up somewhere, most likely in the backseat floor board.....like mine did. Either is not an easy fix and backseat interior panels will need to be removed on both sides in order to access the cylinders and hoses. For my car, im opting to remove the system all together and just operate the convertible top manually.

Here is a good video for replacing the cylinders. Keep in mind if you go this far into the repair, replace the lines and connections while youre at it, because the factory stuff will fail soon enough

Mine was acting up too. Loud pump noise and Jerky up and down. Added some ATF, more than I thought it would take, fine now.
And the rubber plug is a PITA to get out and back in.
