I know y'all here get a lot of people throwing out ideas, and dreaming. (I do that a lot myself) Point being, I've managed across 2500 bucks straight and clear with no obligations nailed to it. I'd like some insight into making my [broken] car more reliable.

It's been too damned cold out to properly work on the car, so its been sitting for a while. The whole car just overheats and, since then, the radiator has sprung some holes. I am going to order a new mishi (with the warranty) from american muscle ($230), along with rigorously inspecting all coolant hoses, lines, the water pump, thermostat and coolant itself. I'm also going to see if i cant get the current mishi repaired as a backup. That f'in ECT sensor has been a pain in my butt ever since i got the car. At first it was disconnected and capped off. I've reconnected it and it ran the same (im assuming better) up until the cooling issues. (A good month and a half timelapse) The twin fan wires have melted through, and the wiring is tucked inside the front bumper bar/beam/thing. The CEL has either burnt out, or been removed, and i have yet to be able to pull a code from the computer. As you can tell, this car (although my baby and life) has been a nightmare for me, between a blown transmission and engine related problems. The engine itself is a beast, but these cooling problems are ready to mess that up too.

As you can tell by reading, I *seem* to at least know what may be going on. What I need from you [collectively] is your experiences with your own vehicles, and how you can make what you have more reliable. I will always want more performance, but right now I can't afford any other major meltdowns, and I need this car up and running, for long periods of time. My mods are simple, a mild cam, ported/match stocker heads, bbk headers. A few other things, but all in all, my GTS is (almost) the way it was stock. Gas mileage is always a concern, but I bought a mustang, wtf could anyone expect. I get 25mpg on the highway, and that blows me away so I am very pleased with it.

What are some things that a person can do to increase the life, and road faring capabilities of a SN95? I make 1.5hr trips two or three times a week, and drive a tish up around iowa city (not much). So I'm more concerned with the highway abilities. I'm more talking motor here, I do have 3.73's and I'm not willing to sacrifice them, and the wheels/tires/suspension combo please me well enough [for now]. Is there anyway to control the a/f to maintain safe levels doing 65-70 consistently, ways to improve the cooling, and ensuring proper engine function are things I'm interested in. I've got enough power [for now] so now I need the damned thing to run.

Thank you for your time, and I really appreciate the insight. Obviously the less I could spend the better, but like I said, I have $2500 dedicated to making it last. I'm comparing it to my mothers 195k-mile 03 camry. It sounds like death, but runs the same as when we got it. (Apples to oranges, whatever) My point being, RELIABILITY. Thanks again :)

check all your wiring make sure nothing is shorted out. you could also get a chip for your fans to turn on earlier. there is usually a part in between the fan and the plug in on the harness that has two relays on it i heard if remove it can cause wires to melt.
you should just let me have your busted rad.

Do yourself a favor and buy a stock replacement rad at your local auto parts store. Cheaper and more than enough cooling capacity.
2nd the rad cap, might want to replace it. Are you losing coolant?????? Is the A/C condenser in good shape (most of the fins are straight and not plugged up with dirt/bugs). Does it over heat while stopped or going down the road???? Is you fan actually working??? A stuck thermostat can cause the car to overheat. You list the following mods "billet u/d pullies, mishimoto radiator w/ dual elec fans and 180 thermo." Anyone of these can cause overheating. You also list "milled and port matched heads" Did it start overheating after you pulled the heads?? If yes, you may have installed one of the head gaskets backwards. If you want the highest reliability, return everything to stock.

hah, yeah stock would be great for reliability. nah i bought the car with all the mods, and it ran fine until this issue. i will definitely get the cap checked however. As for losing coolant, i was not, until it overheated and it steamed off, and later these holes developed (again causing coolant loss, but only after it heated up and pressurized enough. (totally sounds like the cap)

the a/c has been removed from the belt ever since ive had it. it never seemed to cause a problem before, but it shouldnt affect the coolant or coolant flow, should it?
