28 or 31 spline t-lok

I am about to rebuild my rear-end and was wondering if it would be worth it to go with a 31 spline setup? I plan on making around 450-500 hp within the next 2 years but I will probably never go to the track or anything like that. I already have a rebuild kit with the carbon discs (got it for free) for my stock t-lok so I could save a good bit of money just putting that in. Will the 28 spline be ok at the power levels listed above?

If you're making 500 hp, and plan on running sticky tires ever, then 31 spline would be the conservative approach.

+1 Better off doing it now when it is apart, than doing it again because it broke.

that power level = 31 spline
that power level plus drag radials = 33 spline easy argument

you know what's expensive? when weak parts blow up and take stuff out along the way.

Nah. There are plenty of folks around here running 10 second turbostangs making 5-900 horsepower on 31 spline axles.

My buddy Trent made 725 rwhp and went 10.25 @ 141 on 31 splines. Have a few others in the 600 rwhp range on 31 splines with a F150 t-lok.

There is no definite setup or power level, that's why I made the comment arguable. Weight/trans/clutch have a lot to do with how long they last. I've seen 31 spline setups blown up around 400whp.

This was with 725 rwhp, 3400 lbs, a stick shift, twin-disc mccleod, full slicks, and very regular track and street abuse. He sheared the teeth off of two cryogenically treated Tremec TKO600 third gears, and the rear end never had the slightest problem.

Glad he had such good luck - that's out of the ordinary, to say the least.
The being able to slip the twin disk rather than dumping a aggressively pucked clutch probably helped.

A 1.4 60' time is not slipping the clutch.

The new GT500s have 540 hp, weigh 4000 lbs, and Ford puts 31 spline axles (not 33) in them. They need to survive every manner of idiot driver that will buy them, and last 100,000 miles.

I think the evidence is pretty clear that 33 spline axles are unnecessary in this application. It's not just the spline count that matters anyway. It's the metallurgy of the axle shaft, and how they are manufactured.

At 700+ hp and 9 second elapsed times, yes, I'd be considering 33 spline axles and a fully race-built rearend.

...but not at 450-500.

I'd go with the 31 splines, that way in the future should you chose to run some stickier tires you won't have to worry about destroying your axles. I went with an 03 Cobra diff for my setup to save a lilttle coin and I've been satisfied thus far.

yeah. 31 spline for sure.

i threw in a set of moser 31 spline axles and used a factory explorer locker in my stang years ago ever thoe i dont ''need'' it.

it's nice to know its in there

The rear end was one of the first things I upgraded on mine I just wanted to get it out of the way b/c I knew I was going to be seeing the track on a reg basis. I went with Moser 31 spline axles and a Ford Racing 31 spline limited slip differential

you can always get a hardened axle from moser which is 28 spline and 40% stronger then stock they claim

I've seen people runs 10.30s at 135+ on stock axles. This was before all the internet builders told everyone that nothing is possible without a fully built motor, Viper T56, 33 spline axles, dyno tune, and a 25.2 chassis.

whats a 25.2 chassis?

also, how often did this 10.3 run take place? was it a one-hit-wonder? or did it hit the track every weekend to rip it up? im not doubting you, just curious how durrable the stock components truely are...

my thinking: if its broken, upgrade it. why open the thing up 100 times if you dont have to? $100.00 stock axles 4 times = 1 time $400.00 axles.... .. .. just sayin'
