Hey guys, I need your help and knowledge please!!!

Here is the story... My cousin built this engine for a guy who owned a Mustang Fox body. Before the engine could get fully completed the guy's Fox body got stolen and never replaced the car with another Mustang. Since he had no need for the engine anymore my cousin bought it back and was planning on putting it in his SN95 Mustang. He isnt around anymore so this engine is just sitting here in the same condition.

From what I have been told the motor is a 302 crate engine that was built back in 2003 with close to $15,000 dollars invested. It was built to produce around 400HP and I was never able to recover any receipts for anything so hear say is all I got. What you see in the pictures is really all I know about it. I noticed there is a gear drive, AFR heads, Holley SysteMax lower Intake, I know it has built internals (Forged pistons, rods, etc)

If you guys can help me out with any additional information like for Example:

What it would be worth in it's current condition?
How much it would cost to complete it?
What parts are needed to complete it?
What are the specs on the block and parts?

Here are some pics and some cast numbers. Thanks for the help.

looks good but I don't think I see 15k in it. What kind of help are you wanting? you would have to open it up to see the pistons, lifters and pushrods to know what it was exactly but you are missing all the accesories on the front of it and a bunch of other stuff to get it running. Maybe with his labor when it was done but right now it doesn't look like anything super special and still some work to complete it.

Well I'm trying to figure out how much the engine could be worth in it's current condition? I'm going to start researching the heads to see the specs on them. What do you know about AFR heads? The block to see if it's a 302. I dont know anything about in the block. My guess is I would have to take it apart to find out.

Also the engine was built back in early 2000 so it was probably more impressive in it's time than it is presently. But you are probably right not $15k it could be less. There is no way of knowing really. I'm just not sure if I can sell it for what it's worth or just keep it. You know?

been sitting for 11 yrs?! then I would be pretty concerned as the bolts are already showing signs of rust and was the intake/spark plug holes left wide open like that the entire time or was there ever anything covering them? With it sitting that long assuming that everything was left wide open will mean that you will probably have to take it all apart, clean it and then put it back together. You have no idea if roaches/bugs/dust has worked its way into it and it will need to be cleaned out. as well as to know what you have inside of it.

It's been stored in a climate controlled storage and it's a clean kept environment with no bugs or roaches. I noticed it has oil in the pan and on the valve springs so I dont think its froze up or anything. Just from the input I have gotten so far it sounds like the engine is not in as good of shape as I thought. This is how it's been stored with a towl over it and no spark plugs in the holes.

ya the rust on oil filter threads would scare me, but just to be safe you could dissasemble it get it cleaned and re-assemble and have a stout engine.

unfortunatly finishing it will not be cheap but it would be a nice thing to have to remember your family with.

flip it over on the stand, take off the oil pan, see what the internals are. there should be part numbers or atleast some type of branding on all of it. The pistons usually have part numbers on the underside of the piston.

AFR 165's

Non roller 302 block.

Half of an intake....

Maybe worth spending $1000 bucks on.

Definatly need to take it apart and see what else it has in it. But its not a high dollar motor.

Heads and rockers new are around $1500, good forged rotating assembly 2-2.5k, complete intake $500, stock 302 block $200-$300. Throw another $300-$400 in head bolts and internal fasteners. This is if everything was bought new and he used the good stuff, I see no more than $4,500 in new parts and that's assuming it has a nice set of forged internals.

Thanks for all of the feedback. I know it has forged internals but I will take it apart and make sure. Judging by all of the comments this engine does not have 15k invested which is good information to know. My bad for the overpost! There is no way for me to edit the headline to this thread or I would delete the $15,000 in parts.

Maybe if it was a turn key crate with some polished pulleys and blown then it might be close to $15,000. If it is something it prolly would be a 347 stroker.

302 with 400hp NA!?

suuuure.

Supposedly with the new P38 heads from John Kaase can make that and more.. But definitly not with the 165s. Never the less, still some decent parts there that are essentially free for the OP.
