Advice About Snow Tires

Since I'm gonna be moving up to Vermont in a few weeks, I wanna get a set of winter tires for the back of the car. My stock tire size is 225/55-16. I went to tirerack.com and they recommend me to use 215/60-16 or 225/55-16 as the alternate size. The tire on the front are basically brand new so I'm not gonna touch them. I wanted to know which would be the best to use? The smaller size is cheaper and the factory size are almost $100 a tire. Would running a smaller size in the back be ok for a while till the warmer weather comes. My new job is about a half hour away. Plus I'll be living in the middle of no where so there isn't much to do so I'll be just going back and forth to work.

The smaller the tire would be better in the snow. Like when i was driving last weekend in what we had even on my 255/45/17 i was all over the place. I saw the cars with the smaller width tires being able to maneuver a lot better then i was able to.

I'd personally go with the stock size but skinnier tires are better for snow. Not sure that much of a difference would be noticeable though. I had 245/45-17s on my car for one winter and it went through snow pretty dang good.

Get a cheap old truck beater and park ur car!

But thinner is better in theory in snow.

I'm going to but I have to make money for that first. For now, I'm gonna drive my vert till I can afford another vehicle.

Save the cash and go 215's, also get some weight in your trunk

I ran 215's firestone winterfires on the rear of my 00 Gt with all season 215 fronts for two years with a couple hundred pounds of weight over the rear axle and had no issues at all.

You could probaly get a cheap beat 4wd explorer or old blazer for 300- 400 dollars, if your gonna be drivin that much that far up north it'd probaly be a little safer and more reliable, plus then you got a new dd.

Get the skinnier rubber and keep those Kuhmos for later.

Definitely put some weight in the back too... Good luck with all the snow we're having this season!

When I pack up to leave, I rented a uhaul with a full size car trailer so the mustang will not be seeing any driving when I go. My new job is only a half hour drive one way so it isn't bad. My plan is to look for a beater when I'm up there tho. The guy next door in Vermont has a yard full of cars and I noticed he has a mint condition 62-65 Ford Fairlane so I might look into that for a second project while I'm up there. But a beater car is gonna be my first mission while I'm up there.

Good choice. Nothing makes me madder than rust on otherwise nice cars except people who drive nice cars in the winter. (At least where I live, I know they don't put salt down on the roads everywhere)
