A friend of mine has an AEM ems for sale brand new in the box for $1000. I know they sell for 1500/1600 usually, so this is a steal. I just need to know how easy or hard they are to deal with. It is 94/95 5.0 specific, so it should work even though it will be used on a 5.8 correct ?

It will plug right in and work fine. Remember though, it'll only come with a base line to get the car started. You need to find a tuner that TUNES AEM. So...you're local DiabloSport or SCT Tuner may not cut the mustard.

I thought AEM was more Import centered....

You thought wrong. AEM EMS (Engine Management System) is a directed plug and play standalone ecu. It is the ONLY plug and play ECU (NOT A PIGGY BACK LIKE ANDERSON PMS). Its a cheaper option for those that are pushing the limits of the factory ECUs compared to say a FAST DFI or Motec System. No rewiring required. It also can activate a nitrous system, monitor your wideband O2, 2 step, boost control, etc etc....Alot more than your stock ecu could ever think about doing.

They made their name and money off of the import scene and have expanded ALOT more since.

Thanks Ryclef. I know i'm going to catch some fire for this but... The guy is a long time friend, also a pro import tuner and racer. He knows the AEM VERY well. This will be his first Mustang tune. He's already working on a twin turbo setup for my car, that I would then get tuned by a Mustang tuner. But he came across this AEM and offered it to me very cheap. Being that he's familiar with it, it's hard to pass up.

I know... I'm a domestic guy all the way, but I've been trying to bring him over from the rice side. He definitely knows what he's doing, he races a naturally aspirated import class in NHRA, 2nd place on the east coast last year(Civic hatch 11.17) .
I know I deserve :slap:, but I'm getting everything at his cost so...

So it's like the FAST setup, only cheaper, and I guess not as well known... I know alot about parts, or atleast know about parts and part suppliers, but i always thought AEM was based more towards Imports  I wonder who around can tune the AEM system... I don't know about that kinda stuff. I'm afraid to give it a shot. LOL

Nothing wrong with a fast import man. Trust me, I work on them daily at the shop. Its the majority of our business.

As far as AEM, you don't hear much about them in the Mustang world b/c well, you don't run across alot of Mustang's that really fit the bill to run something like it. 800hp mustangs can still run a factory ECU with a tune....anything more than that...9 out of 10 times, they're full on race cars and they can afford the high dollar EFI systems. Its a small crowd that the AEM is aimed at but it does work...and work well for the money.

Ry, give me an honest opinion. By your comment, I'm thinking that I can put the $1K towards the turbo kit and just get my stock ECU chipped for my setup, tuned by somebody familiar with the stang ECU(most likely PSI Performance around Allentown, PA).
I want to go with small twins, he tells me I would get what I'm looking for and be happy with it with just one medium size turbo. My goal for the car is 425- 450 HP street car that will only see the track once, maybe twice a year. At the most driven 1500+- miles in a year. Should I just stick to the stock ECU ? It would keep the wife from :tickedoff:.

Also, I already have a 90mm MAF, 30lb injectors and a 255lph pump ready to install. Will that be enough to support the HP goal I have in mind ? Right now it's running on an almost stock(everything refreshed with less than 2K miles) Lightning block .030 over, with forged TRWs, a very mild Lunati cam, with low compression ready for boost. Also the L's GT40 heads with a valve job and GT40 intakes.

I agree that you just go with a single turbo for what you want. It will have plenty of spool, be civilized and make working on it, installing it, and the piping MUCH more simple. A turbo like a MP70 would be pretty much ideal for what you're wanting and you can find them for cheap on eBay or Turbomustangs.com...check their classifieds. 450 would be a cake walk for it. I would consider 42lbs injectors though. You want to leave room to grow a bit...not push the limits of your current injectors. Chipping your stock ECU would be more than fine as well.

Thanks, I'll look into the single setup with just a chip. It'll save me a bundle.

Theres a lot of guys using the AEM computer, and seem to be very happy with it. From what Ive read on Corral and TurboMustangs.

Its like an in between of a stock computer with a chip or piggyback and an aftermarket unit (FAST, BS3, Accel DFI etc).

There is a known shop of out Illinois (I think its Kurgan? but I could be wrong) that likes to use the AEM and offers lots of support for it.
You will find support for it on the forums Ive mentioned as well....

I wouldnt mind trying it (AEM) for myself one day.......

i wouldn't shell out 1000 bux on something I'd still have to mess with to learn how to use. It could end up being a huge mess. I second the idea of turbo with a chip. I myself am running a standalone ecu (megasquirt) in my car that did fine without it. It's not my daily so not a big deal. If you want to learn about tuning I would get it. but if you just wanna go fast, go with a turbo and have someone else tune it.
