axle question

hey guys so i picked up a 95 gt and it ended up having a bent axle.i opened it up and found out it has 373s and 31 splines.soo i got some 31 spline from a 98 cobra but the were shorter?? im thinking the rearend i have is out of an explorer mabe?? or a newer mustang with 31 splines? how do i find out exactly what my rearend is and what it came out of so i can get an axle for it????

A 98 Cobra should be 28 spline IIRC. Stock anyway.

Explorer has 31 spline, but I'm not sure on the axle length. The 99-04 Mustang axles are a little longer than the 94-98, but all are 28. Unless they are aftermarket.

Is there any sign of welding on the housing? I think if you use a complete 8.8 from a Explorer some modifications are needed. Hope that helps.

Post a pic of the rear and your axle length and i'll tell you what you have.

i found out its a 8.8 but the axles are 30 5/8s long and have abs rings with 31 splines.im thinkin aftermarket? also to add i got a explorer axle that was the same length but the bearings it takes are bigger.
