Bad day at the track. Trans problem.

So, I have a story to tell, unfortunately..

About 2 weeks ago I put a tfs1 cam into my 94gt that has a 95 cobra motor. Pulls good.

But, today at the track the numbers said otherwise.. so I ran tthe car one my time down the 1320. I know it needs a tune for the cam, but its been running fine. What happened on my last pass blew me away...

Launched the car, 1st, 2nd, went to shift into 3rd and all hell broke loose. The car wouldn't go into gear, I could hear something like a chunk of metal getting mashed around in the trans.

So I made it to the end of the track, pushed it off the rest of the way. So I started to diagnose what I could. Here's what I got:

Engine off:
Shifter shifts in every gear fine, clutch is easy to press and depress as normal. Car moves fine when pushed in nuetral.

Engine on:
when I push the clutch in, the god awefull noise is made, and it will not go into any gear. When I try to put it into a gear, I can hear something grinding from what seems to be below the shifter. I turned the engine off, put the car in 1st, started it up, let the clutch out a little. The clutch would grab good but as I let it out, the chatter in the trans started again.

I'm hoping I didn't hurt the motor. It starts up just fine but sounds like it has some valve tick now, or maybe that another noise from the trans, I'm not sure.

Are the 94/95 T5 specific? Or can I use a fox body T5? My buddy said something about an electronic plug/ wire on the 94/95 that fox don't have.

I'm really hoping the clutch blew apart, being its a stock clutch, but I fear the worst.

Clutch or the throwout bearing. Does it make the noise when the clutch is engaged and doesnt make it when the clutch is disengaged?

Your motor should be fine. As long as you didnt sit there and bounce off of 7,000 rpms if you missed a shift or something. Lol.

ouch man sorry to hear. looks like your pulling the t5 out no matter what. once you have the t5 out roll it through each gear by hand that should give you a good feel for the gears. also drain the fuild and see if there is any metal.

i'd suggest doing this even if you find a bad t.o. bearing or a messed up disk/pressure plate.

i've done a cluch on a 93 328i bmw step one to pulling the trans was taking the windsheild wipers off. long story short put the new clutch kit in and it had the same problem. did all that bs again to find 2nd gear gone and had to order a new 5speed.

Thanks guys. Yea, I plan to pull the trans when I wake. I'm guessing I have to pull my long tubes...damn.. lol.

The only way the trans will let me push the cluth pedal down is when the engine is off. Basically, I can't use the clutch or shift into a gear with the engine on.

Oh and I plan on draining the fluid anyway. Irinically, that was on my things to do list today before I got short notice to head to the test n tune event with some friends.

While I have everyones attention, I checked to see if I had the right ecu for the motor. Motor is a 95 cobra. Car is a 94 gt.

The ecu number I just looked at said T4M0. Which is this for, the gt or cobra?

Would a cobra computer make a difference?

Also, pulled the trans today. Clutch is fine. I put the trans in nuetral and turned the input shaft and it would turn for a sec then get caught on something and stop.

Basically, I f'ed something up in the trans.

What are my options here? This is what I've considered:

Rebuild this trans using Liberty Gear parts
Buying a tremec trans, 3550 or something else
Getting a used fox trans and using my bellhousing and input shaft.

Mind you, this isn't a strip car. Its a street car I drive to and from work, but take to the track a lot. I want the car back on the road as soon as possible and cost is a big issue. My job sucks lol.

get a gearbox from the junkyard and save up for a tremec.

and a cobra ecm would require you to swap out to 24# injectors, or tune it for the 19#ers

The motor in my car is an actual cobra motor from a 1995 cobra in which it was pulled from.

Would a T5 from a newer V6 mustang work and be just as strong as a _5 from a fox body?

yes, same as a fox T5

and i honestly dont give a crap what the engine is out of.. If you want to run a cobra ecm, you need 24# injectors... or a tune.

Right, I know this. I'm pretty sure the cobra motor came with blue top, 24# injectors though, along with gt40 heads and intake, and 1.7 crane cam roller rockers.. or at least, that's what I noticed while doing a cam swap..

So would a newer v6 T5 fit right it with the stock bell housing and input shaft? Or would I have to use mine from my old trans? I found one out of a 99 V6 stang I believe.

Also, I noticed my trans is made by borg warner, and that 99 v6 trans is by tremec. Which is the more reliable of the transmissions?

the 99+ will be some work. You need to notch the output shaft for the speedo gear, and then have to swap tailshaft housings with your stock trans.

I'd recommend you get a 98 or older

same thing... Tremec bought the design and patent from borg warner

Ok, I decided I'm gonna rebuild my T5 myself. Rebuild kits range from $230-$275.

Seems like everone and their brother makes a rebuild kit.

Who makes the strongest rebuild kit?
Guys on another forum makes it seem like rebuilding my trans is easy. Anyone have any experience on this?

Astroperformance makes the A5 kit
g-force makes a kit as well

IIRC, both are over $1k
