Bad motor mounts and premature clutch wear

Does anyone know if bad motor mounts will lead to premature clutch wear or cause TOB to go out faster? I've been through 3 clutches in the past 8 months. The first one was installed wrong by a repair shop that was a SPEC stage 1. The second one I put in was a King Cobra and after about 1000 miles of easy driving the TOB suddenly exploded without ever making a sound like it was going bad. The third clutch is a SPEC stage 1 that is currently in use and it started out great but now I am noticing the TOB starting to chatter (not whining) at idle and cruising. I know my motor mounts are in really bad shape they are stock and its a '96 GT. I was wondering if the two could be related. I was thinking that if there is more movement coming from the engine if that could transfer to the driveline and cause my clutches to fail. Thanks in advance for your help.

not likely. the motor and transmission are one unit once installed, and the mounts external to that unit. clutch fork, pivot, internal trans/input shaft, improper installation, or crankshaft problems could result in premature clutch wear...

yea you would have other issues if the motor mounts somehow were causing that. You definatly have an underlying issue going on

I dunno, that's about how long aftermarket, specifically spec, TOB's last for me.

i agree.

i splurged for a FRPP H.D. TOB this go around. i havent had an issue yet, and i highly suggest you use one instead of crappy aftermarket units.

Well, I had that King Cobra clutch with the FRPP TOB that exploded on me without making a sound so I don't know about FRPP TOB.

Well, the first clutch was done by a national chain repair shop (which was installed improperly). Clutch two and three were done by a local repair shop owned by a close friend to me (so I would like to think they were installed properly). If it helps, I only hear a noise when the clutch is out. When it is pushed in there is no sound not even a whine. Like I said before the sound is more like a metal on metal chatter not a whine or screeching. Would that be TOB or pilot bearing?

Sounds like the TOB did they replace the Pilot bearing every time??? Is your pivot ball bent?? What about your clutch fork being bent. Something else is causing this.

Yes, I am well aware of how a clutch works. Thanks. When the clutch is DISENGAGED I don't hear anything. Only when the clutch is ENGAGED I hear a chattering. Like I said I would assume the shop replaced the pilot bearing each time atleast on clutch two and three. The clutch fork is brand new from FRPP not even 1500 miles on it. The pivot ball is also brand new about 4000 miles on it. The pivot ball broke after the first clutch was installed that is how I knew the first clutch was installed improperly. Now would the sound be coming from the pilot bearing or the TOB?

I had this same problem the transmission was off just a tiny bit which caused the problems with the whole drivetrain a very $$ mistake it caused premature wear on the clutch, broke the clutch fork and input shaft off the transmission, I had to spend $2k to replace all the shit that already cost me $3k, deff pull the transmission and make sure everything was installed correctly

So it could be that the transmission is not bolted up to the engine correctly. How can you tell if the imput shaft is bent? Is that something you can see if the transmission is out of the car?

Yeah I brought my car to my shop that built my motor, and he said I had the transmission off just a inch or so they took the transmission out and showed me all the wear on the drivetrain cause it was just off enough, I hadto replace it al, very $ little mistake to make, make sure the shop measures and lines up everything correctly, esp when its off its off on ur crank of ur engine and ur transmission thats why its an $$ mistake,

Wow, thanks for the info. I'm going back to the shop this week on my day off to have them check everything and make sure everything is lined up right.
