Brake Fluid

recently some people have been asking me how often the brake fluid should be changed in their cars ( some newer, and some non mustangs as well). I really never gave it any thought until i was approached about it. apparently when they take their cars in for regular maintenance, the shop tries to sell them a brake fluid change - and it isnt cheap either.

whats the deal? thoughts / comments???

Your older type fluid is pretty anhydroscopic, ie it absorbs moisture, most cars i get in for service state change the fluid around every 3 years or at certain service intervals.
Newer silicone based fluids are better, boil at higher temps, and resist moisture better.
I dont think they are deliberately trying to rip people off as it should be changed at some point, sooner if its never been done rather than later but its a service you pay for of course.
I use an air pressure bleeder, that way your not pumping the master cylinder up and down like a lunatic, you just force fluid through each bleed nipple until it comes out clean.
Rule of thumb is if the fluid looks dirty in the master cylinder, then change it.

I used to never change my brake fluid, but now I change it every 3 to 5 years. It only takes about 30 minutes to do the old way.
