I met a guy off corral.net last night to pick up my moser 31spline axles. He threw in a broken practically new bbk edelbrock 75mm throttle body. the (cast aluminum i think?) peice that holds the butterfly flap broke right before the screw that hold it on. The throttle spring is also missing, but it looks like an easy fix.

would edelbrock or bbk sell this peice? will the part off of my 70 mm bbk edelbrock work?

Well, i called edelbrock today. They said they have not made throttle bodys with BBK in 5 years, so they wouldnt fix it.

They told me to call BBK, but BBK doesnt have a number, so I emaied BBK Tech.

Heres my email

"I have a BBK Edlebrock 75mm Throttle Body for my 94 Mustang GT. I have had the throttle body for awhile now with no problems, but recently the "throttle shaft" broke. This is the shaft that goes through the throttle body, from the throttle spring to the TPS. The butterly flap swivels on this peice also, and is screwed to the throttle shaft with 2 small screws.

I called edelbrock and they told me that BBK should carry this "throttle shaft."

Please let me know if I could somehow purchase this part from you and how much.

Thank you,

Mitchell"

BBK:

Unfortunately, those are not parts that we offer for sale due to liability reasons.

It’s too easy to not assemble the TB properly and lose a screw into the motor.

ME

so my $220 throttle body is no good b/c of this little broken part?

BBK

I wish there was something I could do, but the part is not under warranty and the replacement parts are just not available.

In addition to the liability issue, we have changed our shafts and the internals of those throttle bodies since we stopped making them for Edelbrock to their specs years ago.

The parts we have here wouldn’t even fit that old of a TB.

You could get it TIG welded locally to repair the shaft.

ME

The only problem is the peice that broke off is missing. its about 1/4 inch of the shaft. are you sure a shaft from another TB wouldnt work? i would accept full responsibility for fixing it, there would be no liability issue, i just cannot afford $220 for another part that would be so easy to fix if i had that small shaft

BBK

I know for sure that those units have been changed and that the new shaft will not work in the old TB.

The bearings have been changed too and they will not fit in the old casting either.

after that i basically said thanks for your help, although i wish bbk stood behind their parts better. The guy was good and everything but didnt really help me at all. Luckily this part did not break on me, i got it for free, otherwise i'd be really upset

moral of the story, bbk does not stand behind their products.

Wow, it sounds like those two companies had a bad falling out. Seems like that TB was part of the prob. If what a lot of people say about the quality of BBK's products is correct then it seems like the problem was on BBK's end.

what if u ship it to them, cant they fix it????

Did you ask?

They said that it wasnt covered under warranty, so they couldnt fix it. i even asked if i payed for it to be fixed if they could do it, they still said that they no longer make that style "throttle shaft" (the part that broke).

i took apart my 70mm bbk edelbrock thats on my car. the axle shaft and butterfly flap are designed with reinforcements so they dont break, so i'm guessing that the 75mm is an earlier design.

Being in the industry I'll try to shine a little light on this. It will be difficult to know whether to pin this on BBK or Edelbrock.

.......we have changed our shafts and the internals of those throttle bodies since we stopped making them for Edelbrock to their specs years ago.

This is BBK saying that the throttle body was built to Edelbrock's specs which is BBK saying that the failure is due to Edelbrock's design.

On the flip side, it is possible that Edelbrock merely specified other characteristics of the throttle body and BBK chose how to meet those spec's. If BBK chose to cut some corners on the engineering of the throttle shaft then that is on BBK.

These two explanations are why I say it will be difficult to know which company is at fault. By the mere fact that there are no more of these shafts and they have changed the design says that it is known that the previous shaft had a flaw. Looking at your pictures of the shaft it broke right where it should, where the hole is drilled through thereby making the weakest section of the shaft due to the least amount of material being present. Evidently the shaft was too thin, narrow, or otherwise light in this area.

This is just like the situation between Summit Racing and Barry Grant. Each company told me that they dropped the other. We'll never know for sure how it went.

From the response you got from BBK I would use the throttle body for scrap aluminum. It sounds like it is known to be a flawed design. At least you didn't lose anything on it.
