96 mustang gt 4.6. I understand that these year model stangs and vics have a bad reputation of burning oil around 100k. Well I noticed when I first got the car about 2 months ago a very strong oil burning smell. I figured it was just the car running rich because it has no cats....then I noticed the blue smoke. It does not smoke like crazy 24/7 its only when I shut it off for a few minutes restart it and rev it a little and when the car gets to operating temp and I go to start off it puffs. I don't think its the rings because it doesn't poor smoke. Any ideas? Valve seals, guides, pcv? Anything will help. Thanks guys. Oh and also there is a little oil residue around the pcv area on the driver side valve cover.

I'd check your valve cover gaskets to make sure they aren't leaking any oil onto your exhaust manifolds. That would cause the burning oil smell

Stem seals most likely. Let it idle for 10 or 15 minute and then rev it up, it will smoke every time. It's the exhaust stems too..

I vote both of these. Stem seals go on these cars especially if the car hasn't had synthetic oil all its life to minimize the wear the stem seals get, and the valve covers leak as well if the car has had regular oil then synthetic, or blends.

Stem seals dont worry about to much, it will burn some oil but just keep an eye on it every 3,000 miles. Valve covers I would keep a bigger eye on because thats a bigger problem but it can be easily changed.

My old sixer burned a little bit of oil until I replaced the valve cover gaskets. Pretty common on older cars. Pretty easy to fix as well. Good luck.

Will it hurt anything internal if I just ride for a while? That's mainly my issue. I don't have a problem fixing it I just need to save the money.

When I go to replace the stem seals will I have to adjust my valves? And what are the torque specs on the rockers and head bolts?

wont hurt anything internally if its just a small amount and not common. it will foul plugs and reduce MPG over time. May foul out your o2 sensors as well.

you'll have to have someone more knowelgeable chime in. I've never rebuilt a modular head before.

As for gaskets, your link didnt work for me. fel-pro and ford are the two names i trust.
