This is turning out to be a very delicate situation. I just turned 16 last saturday and just actually got my car. I want to make it mine soo I wanted mods, well my mechanic/boss told me I would need a stall if I went with h/c/i he didn't exactly tell me what RPM or what company to buy it from.

1500 to 1800 is right. it just depends on who what when, there wasn't great quality control plus new to 100k will make a difference on actual stall speed.

This probably a sreally retarded question, but I'm new to mods. What exactly does a stall converter do?
stalling the converter is basically how high of rpm is allowed before the converter starts to engage hince the higher the number the more rpm is need before your car will go. I've got a dayco 2300-2600 stall in mine. got it for around $300 and seems to be ok. you need a higher stall converter with a cam because of loss of vaccum and the car will die with the stock converter trying to grab too much.

Alright...thanks alot slopony, that helped me alot. And thanks to stang94x for giving me that factory stall. So I would need somewhere around a low-mid 2000 rpm stall for a street car with 3.73 rear gears and a TFS stage 1.

I would talk to a trans/converter company with someone individually. Go through everything with plans etc.

When completed a tech will give you the correct stall to use.

Like I said before. J.R. Can probably help you.

yea, it's better to have a converter matched for what your running. I'm planning one day to run a supercharger and maybe convert to a manual trans, but for now I cheaped out on the converter cause my engine threw the cam bolt out and I had it rebuilt so my budget was shot. if I stick auto I'll probably look into a better converter but for now it's working ok with the new cam.

go to http://www.performanceautomatic.com and call them, ask them what stall you need, and they will ask you what motor you have and what you have done or are going to do to it, what tranny you have, and what gears youll be running and they will tell you what stall would be good for your combo

You pick the h/c/i then i give you my recomendation. converters start at 400 and go to over 1000 depending on your needs. all are lifetime warranteed. the last guy to get a trans/converter combo from me dropped 3 tenths off his et with a worse 60 ft and no other changes.
