I have had it with this Pypes cat back(has generic 2 chambers instead of the glasspacks) I probably have 10-12 hours in trying to make it fit. As you can see the passenger side is very low(had to get the muffler pointed that way to get the tailpipe at a decent angle to match the driver side) Muffler hit the ground a couple times yesterday and of course knocked that side out of alignment.

So! I ordered a Flowmaster catback this morning. It is the Foxbody 87-93 kit(they are very on sale!) but I am pretty sure it will be ok. I will keep you all posted.

I just went through this on the 01 cobra. Just like you, the Pypes Xpipe i installed is a 3 piece system and was hanging down lower than my liking. I got it all bolted up to the engine and didnt bolt then tailpipes on yet, took a jack and jacked up the X location. Helped out alot! Dont hang near as bad as it did.

Them Flowmaster kits hit right on the pushrods. I know youre going to like it!

I could probably get this Pypes kit to fit OK if I cut the hangers off and rewelded them but I am so over it... I do kind of like the giant tips tho!

Never again with Pypes.

Thanks for the offer! In all my years of Mustangs I have never installed a set of underdrives. I always had concerns of overheating or undercharging. For the crank pulley to be effective would it also need the water pump and alternator pulleys?

Ross
Not necessarily, I originally bought just the crank pulley due to the same concerns you have. Did it in a parts store parking lot. Back to back, same day, same temperature and weather and all, I felt some pick up. Undercharging would be my only concern for you since you have an automatic, and can’t just raise the idle. You would only be undercharging with your lights on though. If anything, the crank pulley would be worth the most, since it slows everything down.

If you want to fix this, you need to speed up the alternator with a smaller pulley. You won’t have any overheating, even if your cooling system is in less than perfect shape. I ended up getting the water pump pulley too and still run cool as can be.

Up to you if you want it, the offer is always there, but that is what you may need to do to fix undercharging with your lights on.

Great explanation and I appreciate the offer. I think I am going to leave the stock pulleys. A few extra hp would be nice but I am not willing to sacrifice reliability on this one! We have been driving the heck out of it day and night :)

Yeah they do! I loved loved way the off road H and flowmasters sounded on the red car. Now I love the way the off road X and bassani catback sounds on it.

Drove the car out to western Maryland 2 weekends ago. It was pretty unhappy lol. Ambient temps were in the 90s at times. Car was getting hot and pinging going up hills, and the transmission intermittently was going out of overdrive and even acting like it was in neutral.

For the running hot- going to put a 180 thermostat in it and a real temp gauge. I know the stock is not reliable but it was also getting nearly all the way to the "L" in NORMAL when it normally runs in N,O,R... The pinging and lack of power seemed to confirm she was hot. I thought maybe the timing was off but its set exactly at 10... Also thought maybe I had air in the system, but I put the burping funnel on it and it did not purge any air. Radiator looks fairly new. Water pump looks original.

For the transmission- the internet suggests my problem might be caused by a bad neutral safety switch. I picked one up and went to install it but it seemed tight under there and I did not feel like unbolting things. I will get it installed eventually. If this does not fix the problem I will start sourcing parts for a T5 swap.

On a positive note- A/C was cold, handling and brakes were phenomenal. Does not drone at 2k(maybe its the goofy intercooled pypes tips?) Also had a great time with my son!

A colder thermostat is more of a bandaid than a fix, I would flush out your radiator to see if there is any junk in there, and run a more water favoured mix like 70/30. I run straight water out of the hose in the summer, my car will stay cool on 50/50 but water will keep it significantly cooler. There are downsides but those can be taken care of if you are careful about it.

Agree with the 180 thermo not being a "fix" It is more of a "while I am in there" I am very happy with the 180's in my Cobra, and my 85 C10, and everything else I have ever owned! I will definitely flush the system, and I will probably add some "water wetter" which I have also used successfully in the past. I have a brand new Mishimoto aluminum rad on the shelf but that is destined for the Cobra someday...

70/30 water/coolant is an idea I had not considered. At what temp would it be slushy tho? Hmmm....

I wouldn’t use water wetter, it’s designed to be used with straight water. If it is used with coolant it has a tendency to cause an algae like muck in the overflow tank and cooling system. There are charts online showing the freezing temp of coolant mixtures. I don’t know the weather in your area, but realistically you could just change the coolant according to the weather.

Interesting! I have used it in the past and I do not recall any ill effects..

Going to make a few passes at the track on Saturday... I am guessing bottom 15's at like 90-92. I have never gone WOT up the gears in this car so we'll see how the trans does.

Track was packed! Last test and tune of the year and good weather. Only got two runs in, hit the number I wanted on the 2nd run so I didn't see the point in waiting another hour plus in the lanes.

Misc- I think I had the slowest car there and was one of the only guys on street tires. I miss the 90s and 00's when lots of regular cars would show up and a new car wasn't an instant race car(s550 with drag pack, no mufflers, and a tune)

Anyway. I guess that is because I am old now(44)

First pass I left at idle and just eased into the throttle. Seemed like it was never going to shift into 2nd but it finally did at an indicated 5500 rpm or so. Felt decent and went 15.3@64

2nd pass car was definitely colder. Footbraked the RPM's up a little and off I went. Gave it all the throttle at once. I will have to check the slip for the 60ft but I think it was a high 2.2 or a mid 2.3. Shifted way crisper and faster this time. Went [email protected]!
I am pretty happy with that for an AODE... I think some 3.73s would go a long way, maybe even some 4.10s.

My dad's LS2 Vette went 12.6 coasting... He said it felt like the rear stepped out on him(car that went down the lane before him was smoking pretty bad- they checked for oil but didn't do any cleanup)
