my car (95 GT auto.)pings alot when it warms up. the temp stays between the "R" and the "M". i have set the timing at 0,10 and 12 degrees,no change. i replaced the pump to a 255lph, new fuel filter, adj.fuel press.reg., gauge, 180 degree thermastat, cap&rotor, plugs, MSD coil. still pings. just passed emissions perfectly. i am running out of ideas, any help would be appreciated.

Is that you Josh?

The pinging problem is a real issue with the 94-95 cars. One of my old convertibles didn't stop pinging until I set the timing at 6* initial, put in colder plugs, put the fuel pressure at 42 psi, and ran good gas all the time. Even then, it would still occasionally ping.

Also, if your EGR isn't working, that can cause problems too.

Haha. Glad to have you here man.

First things first - you MUST use 91 octane. The SN 5.0s aren't nearly as forgiving as your foxbody was.

Is the EGR working correctly? Got a CEL or any codes? Are you consuming any oil that you can tell? The black car had severe detonation problems, only to later find out (right before I got rid of it) that one of the intake gaskets was damaged, causing oil to get sucked into the intake tract. When I fixed that, it made a huge difference.

where is the temp sensor located? where does everyones temp gauge needle sit at normal operating temp?

Temp sensor that runs the gauge is in the driver side of the lower intake, up front. Has a single wire going to it. Looks like this:

These cars tend to run hotter than the foxbody. My advice is to get a real water temp gauge in it ASAP.

Paul.

My gauge sits on the right side of the N.

When the A/C is on it is more towards the R.

cool its fixed but just a fyi going forward... as paul stated oil in the intake will cause detonation. i have seen a lot of cheap pep boys style replacement pcv valves suck a ton of oil and it always puddles in runners 7/8. its always best to get the pcv from the dealer and also swap out the inner screen at the same time.

high rpm kills the stock dampeners. sfi is always the best way to go
