A few weeks back my 96 was running hot so I went ahead and replaced all of the cooling system. Radiator, water pump, thermostat, hoses and cap. With the exception of the fan.
Everytime I start the car, a few seconds go by and the coolant light comes on. It doesnt run hot anymore. As a matter of fact, in the morning it'll run a little over a quarter. But the light is still on.
Ive checked the coolant and oil and both are clean. Has anyone experienced a similar issue? Im not sure if a faulty radiator fan would cause this but I didnt have this light issue before, not even when it was running hot!
Im confused, thanks

check system for leaks, check the sysem for air pockets, bleed air from system and then top off as needed. Check and verify level sensor is working correctly

aah, I see. I didnt think about that one. Im gonna check the sensor this weekend. I guess it wouldnt hurt to blled the system also.
If i remember correctly, you remove the cap, let it run for 10-15 minutes and top off, right? Thanks for your input guys!

check those then get back to me, this will take a little diagnosis. could even be a pinched wire or a wire intermittantly shorting out.

squeeze the coolant hoses with the car off. the top and the bottom hoses. air traps in the block and thermostat passage area.

thats another one i didnt think about. I usually unhook the battery after "go-fast mods." I'll give it a shot also. I'll do all the checks and procedures in one shot and hope for the best. thanks

1996GT:

The light might be coming on because the float is getting stuck. If there is ANY crap in the fluid then it will get between the float and the guide rod.

You won't like this but drain the coolant down so that the expansion tank is empty. Remove the tank. Flush the tank with full flow from a garden hose. While the water is flowing, gently move the float up and down with a piece of coat hanger or copper wire. Once done, test the movement of the float by filling and emptying and confirm that the float moves up and down freely. That should do it.

HTH,

Chris
