hey all
my 96 mystic is down for awhile, and i got to wondering what all would be needed to make it into a convertible?
i know its a ton of work and all, but it'd be pretty sick to have the only mystic vert.
anyway if anyone knows of a good writeup or anything please let me know

we did it at mustang ranch to a boss 302 and it turned out amazing. i know its abnormal, but where the paint is so hard to get it would be unique, maybe a couple others. i wouldnt have bought a mystic if i wanted a car the blended in with the rest of the pack. anyway if you dont have anything helpful to say just stay out of the topic i'm doing it either way and just wanted to know if anyone had a good writeup or any experience with it. i know its a lot of work, a shit ton of work, but if it makes the car mine then its worth it to me.

I don't know much of anything, useful!! That sounds pretty awesome if you did it, though!! I'd love to see pics of that Boss 302 y'all did. Post pics of whatever you have. You sound like a cool owner, to me!! I'm all for something you never see! Would be cool if you pulled it off. I have never even heard of doing this.

its not all that bad, i left a 70s ford truck unlocked outside that day and everyone forgot about it and i guess some punk kids took the carb and battery one night three weeks later.. other than that i quit on good terms, my friend just said that my ex boss was holding a grudge for it

if i could actually find one of the hardtops as a donor i might consider it! i still want to try and make it as simple as possible.. but the hardtop would definitely be the best of both worlds!

If you touch that roof, I'll kill ya. LOL I'm kidding. Why don't you chop the roof on a GT or something? Mystic Cobra are getting more rare. Don't destroy her. :(

they're not that rare, you just never see them cuz most everyone keeps theirs garaged. 2000 were built, and only around 530 are on the road, with about that many totalled if i remember right. 1996mysticcobra.com has the statistics.
besides, mine has 115k miles, the collector's value is almost gone

Yeah 2,000 isn't alot. Can can do what you want. I'm just saying, your going to chop up a good car. It's your car. It's like buying a 95 Cobra R and making it convertible. You just don't do it.

i wouldnt ever buy a car like that.. i'm not trying to fight, i've had this same argument with myself tons of times, and finally decided fuck it. its a salvage title now anyway.. so this is my official apology to the mustang community, i fucked up a beautiful car, and i'm sorry.

Pretty stupid idea IMO. Why not just buy an actual convertible car?

I'd imagine that coupes, and converts are HIGHLY different from a structural standpoint. Even if you added all the extra shit to help stiffen it up after you cut the roof off, it'll never be as strong as it should.

Also, if you cut the top off, chances are, after all the body work is done, it'll have to be repainted, and if I remember correctly, Mystic paint is nearly impossible to get your hands on, and if you can find it, you can't afford it.

Like I said, stupid idea. If you want a convertible, buy a convertible, don't hack up a coupe.

i've gotten paint for it before. and i'll probably go with the removable hardtop. and yeah the chassis stiffening will be the hardest part, that'll probably be the decider for it.

well.. you look very convinced in doing it, good luck!
Though I will still prefer to leave the car as it is, but that's just my taste.
I still think your car has a lot of collectors value even at 150k+ ..why? Because no matter what the milage is.. It's still a Mystic Cobra!
