so the other day i go to turn my lights on and no dash lights/tail lights (they're on the same circiut). I ck'd all my fuses and all were good. so i figured it's a bad switch take apart the cluster then the switch comes out and look what i found. i guess i was lucky there was no fire.

its either the dimmer or the pigtail. i believe the thick black wire that was popping out of the pigtail on one i used to have.

Chances are the pig tail has melted and isn't making good contact and you messing with the knob is just moving it around enough to make good contact.
The switch and the pigtail are cheap enough so I replaced both at the same time.

you checked every fuse in the car? I Say this because we had the same issue last week in the audio section I think and after a more complete search it was a fuse that he just didn't see or look closely enough at, he found it with a test light. I understand the dimmer being attached to the dash lights but not the brakes, they are however on the same circuit for power I do believe.

Don't forget the fusebox by the battery.

I just fixed this last weekend. It's a wire form the switch you will see has burned out. Fuses won't be the problem. No dash lights + no tail light is a very common problem on our cars.

Pull out the switch and harness and you will see melted wires. Be careful driving it, because they can still short right now. Let me know if you need help with the repair since I just fixed mine.

Surprisingly its supposedly pretty common.
