Obvious question, you are on flat surface right?

Is it the correct dipstick? Maybe someone broke the original and put a replacement in that isn't long enough... or your just really low on oil. Do you change it yourself?

The 96 takes 6 qts and most oil joints only put in 5.

Like Bob said how many quarts did you put in, has the dip stick always worked ie read correctly for you? Also could there be an obstruction in the oil pan/dip stick tube end bent kinked?

Can you take pics of your oil dipstick to see if it's the right one? When you install the dipstick back into the tube does it click or seat all the way onto the dipstick tube? You may have a wrong dipstick/tube.

Its best to do with low oil so it doesnt spill out of the pan depending on where it mounts the pan. Just slowly rotate the tube at the pan and slide out, becareful its quite easy to break off in the pan and then you my friend will be in a pickle and have to dill out and remove the broken piece from the pan.
