Do I need a Tune allready??

In my 97 GT with a standard I pulled the snorkel from the air box got a K&N filter, the car has a cat back the previous owner put on. The previous owner also cut out 4 of the 6 cats and welded in straight pipe. Eventually I'll be putting in a BBK mid pipe with cats so it can pass inspection. But now when I put my foot in it in the upper rpm range it spits and pop's occasionally. Have I exceeded what the stock configuration can handle or should I be looking somewhere else for something wrong.

you dont need one yet...I would look into your plugs, coil, and or wires.

Agreed, you should still be well within the parameter's of the stock ecu.

ditto... a tune never hurts but thats not the problem. i'd check to make sure you dont have a crack in your intake (very common if you still have the plastic intake). could be the MAF or the IAC as well. start with the little stuff and work your way to the intake. our intake was leaking internally (nothing visible) but it was causing the same symptom.

My intake never cracked up there, mine craked in the back by the heater hose.
