do i need cam lube?

im putting pi cams in my car and was wondering if cam lube is needed? ive heard mixed things some people say tha oil is fine. if cam lube is needed what is thebest bang for your buck when it comes to cam lube?

#1 don't bump your thread 28 minutes AFTER you post it, this is a tech section don't spam it up with bumps, and tech times time for people to respond with the correct answer. Wait your turn, you will be call upon and your question will be answered.

#2 if the cam supplier suggests it and in this case if ford recommends that when the cylinder head is reassembled you use the specified assembly lube for some unspecified reason, use it.

throw some assembly lube on the caps and around the cams. It'll be alright.

in assembly you dont want dry journals and bearing areas. its general rule of thumb to lube bearing/journal so it doesnt score/gall/make grooves in shafts. only area should be dry is behind main bearings but lube on the bearings itself during assembly.. only time it is not lubed is during clearance checks. reasons why so you get the most accurate clearance. remove the mains. lube bearing to crank only in that particular area. thats an example. to thoroughly answer your question. yes lube the camshaft bearing journals. i hope this helped. Follow haynes/chiltons manual for installation.

short form, at least use clean engine oil on assembly. do not assemble dry

Duffy sorry for spaming just tryn to get my car put together. Okay ill pick up some assembly lube up and just make sure everything is good and lubed up. Do i need to do an oil change after i use the lube or is it fine?

highly recommend an oil change after a couple of days of normal driving so it can break down most of the chunks of lube. then change oil and go on your way.

i suggest using a Motor oil with high zinc content. they also sell additives. this will help with any metal-to-metal contact my arrise at our modular cam journals.

yea just change the oil after a few days of running, you should change it after the first thousand anyway.

if building a FRESH ENGINE:
use conventional oil to prime and get to operating temps. around 185*(do not let it overheat) for 10-15 minutes. id also recommend an aftermarket oil pressure gauge to keep accurate oil pressure. do not allow operating below 20 psi. after initial start up change the oil again. then change oil 250 miles then 500, 1500, then 2000. after the 2000 mile mark you can use synthetic oil. this precautions make sure rings seat, assembly lube dissolves and decreases metal shavings. first cold start should be 75 psi or so. then it will gradually warm up to 25 psi.

with 4v h.o oil pump it will go to 100psi then settle at 25psi warm.

yes i bought cases of cheap shell conventional 5w-30 for break in process. :crybaby2:
