drain it. Before you drop it get the $5 output shaft plug that prevents the fluid thats still in there to leak out.

If you have an old input shaft, stick it in the transmission, zip tie it in place, and don't drain it. If you're not strong enough to bench press it out, make sure you get a jack under it, or have a friend help you. I had one come out unexpectedly once, dropped it on my chest, and ended up with severe costochondritis that required steroids to heal up. No fun.

What are you dropping the trans for?

Paul.

I know its pretty straight forward. Thanks for the advise guys. I've only helped do one. Never really did one by myself.

And dropping it for clutch, and TO bearing.

If you have a T5, inspect the main bearing retainer for galling while it's out. Inspect your pilot bearing and rear main seal while you're down there. Make sure to have the flywheel resurfaced. Don't lose any bolts.

If you have a stock k-member, the top starter bolt can be a PIA. You can get at it from the front of the engine with a lot of extensions. Otherwise, cut a wrench in half. That works too.

you dont have to remove the crossmember. you can loosen the bolts and just slide it back for access. unless you need more room to beat the snot out of the pilot bearing. use bearing grease or assembly lube sparingly on the bearing retainer. if you were in the beach go to gregory's drivetrain shop. they can resurface it for a fair price.
