dumb question( ECU-computer)

This may be a really stupid question but is there a difference between a car's ECU and its computer? Or are they the same damn thing? Also, when somebody says the 'chipped' their car is it literally a chip or where they plug into the OBD II port and change the actual ECU(or whatever)?? Sorry for the noob question

as for 'chipping' a car it depends on the year. With my car and the a9l comp I have an actual chip plugged in to it. Where as the new edge stangs plug the tuner into the port and change the settings in the ECU

ECU = Electronic Control Unit

ECM = Electronic Control Module


You will see both of these terms used to describe the car's computer.


EEC is the ignition system. What is Ford on now? EEC - IV? EEC - V?

OBD II is the On Board Diagnostics that became standard in 1996 across the entire automotive industry.

Well said Steve. I was bored at the dentist, posting from my phone and gave a crappy reply.

I know my 94 is EEC IV and also the EEC V started in 96(in V8 Mustangs), along with OBD II. I think some other Fords had the newer system before 96. I don't know what they are up to now.
