Electrical Problem

Ok, so I was driving home tonight and I noticed my lights were kinda dim. Whatever, not a big deal. Get a couple more miles down the road and suddenly my Tach starts flippin out and just falls completely. Engine's fine. Weird. Get another mile or so down the road and my stereo cuts off and my dash gets reallly dim. This is when I notice my volt meter is sitting fairly close to the red. I get to the next stop light and run the car up to 4.5k rpm's and bam, it's fine. All the lights are good, stereo and air conditioning work fine. Soo, sorry for the long story, but i'm guessing this is just an alternator problem? If not, what else could this be? I'd rather not get stuck on the side of the road in the middle of the night.

yup alt took a shit or maybe the regulator inside it but a quick trip to autozone and they can check it out.
