Engine almost dies when I brake...or when I put it in drive from reverse

So, you can guess the make of the truck later. But anyway. When I go to stop at a stop sign it will start to die but only sometimes. Then sometimes when I go to shift into drive from reverse it will die or almost die. What the hell is wrong with it?

does it idle fine when it is first started? how does it idle when warm and in park? might be something as simple as the idle set a bit too low. or a vacuum leak.

the coming to a stop or braking deal sounds like a VSS

Idles perfect all the time.

vss is more for when it comes to a stop. it idle's the motor up when slowing down to keep it from stalling.

I had that problem, and have a friend w/ a 95 that does the same thing occasionally. I reset my base idle and that helped but still did it, what honestly nearly eliminated mine was changing the torque converter.
