I hate "undoing" other people's stupidity. I tried to get it off by hand. No luck. I tried to use an oil filter wrench, but the one I had was too small and fits on the FL400S filters that my old V6, the wife's escort and my ranger all use, but wouldn't fit the FL820S filters that the GTs and Cobras use. So I opted for the "screwdriver" method, which I've used in the past on other vehicles and it's worked... but it ultimately failed here. In this case, I removed the guts. I stuck a screwdriver in the small holes around the threaded center hole and with a hammer drove the base of the filter around enough to break the bond and it finally came off.
I put some oil around the gasket of the new Motorcraft filter and hand tightened it on. It'll be good for next time.
