I welded a plate on to my front fraim rails today to mount my nitrous controller and YEEEEEEEHAAAAAAW!!

A DECENT WELD!!!!! Nice looking bead, good penetration, that telltale "swirl" of a good weld! :D

I guess it might be time to upgrade to a decent welder instead of my $99 flux core mig . . . lol.

PS . . don't ask for pics . . I already painted it! :D

Fine . . lol. Don't pay attention to the spatter, it's a flux core and spatter is unaviodable.

It ain't perfect . . . but it's passable. :santa_smiley:

It's a great thing to learn.

You only grind it down if it's a bad weld. On chassis work, the NHRA won't cert the chassis if there are grind marks on it.

I've welded sporadically for a while . . only when the need arises. I'm trying to get better at it, but it's harder than it looks.

Penetration's a little washed on the right side bro! LOL, just bugging man.
Welding is fun IMO, you gotta have a decent machine with enough amps to get a good looking weld ect.
and it's AAAAAL about practice.

arn't self drilling screws one of the best inventions of this century?

are you going to hit the button tomorrow? so to speak...

I've been welding since I was 15........and I am 43 now. I can weld stick, TIG, MIG, and oxy-acetylene, a dying art, in all positions, including pipe. I also have a Ford welding certification (I work there). I can weld stainless steel, aluminum, hot and cold rolled, and cast iron.

Someone said it, it is all about practice. Get a few pieces of steel plate and practice running bead after bead after bead. It's the only way to get good at it. Your weld looks like it will hold for what you are doing with it. Next time try moving the tip in little circles in order to make a slightly larger puddle. It will cover the joint with weld better and leave a nicer looking bead.

Is your welder $99 because it is used or because it's Chinese? I got an American made Hobart wire welder at Harbor Freight for $325. I am using the flux cored wire it came with and it does just fine. Maybe down the road I will get the MIG kit for it but right now I can do everything I need with it.

That WAS making little circles . . lol. The welder was $99 because it's chinese. And, it runs on 110 not 220. It's a pos.

looks good man, i can see where ethier you stopped and started again, or you paused then kept going.

No matter what anyone tells you NEVER grind down a weld. it weakens the weld tremendously. if you dont like the look of a weld, grind down the pieces of metal in a sence beveling. then weld in the gulley and putty over them. But i would never suggest grinding the welds smooth.
