First time at autoX

So, after 5 years of road racing, and track days, I've tried my first ever autoX event yesterday. I gotta say, I can definitely see a lot of benefits. For one, the runs are short, so my car does not overheat. I have a real problem with that when track speed average is about 50 or so. Another thing I really liked was that I was not racing with other people, but practicing against myself. After I got familiar with the course, I started trying new things, remembering and applying some of the older concepts, such as dialing back the aggressive driving to go faster. It's a lot easier to do that when you are not red misted and hell bent on overtaking someone.

By the end of the day, I have improved my times quite a bit. My fastest run felt like I was just cruising. I did kick up a few cones, but that was to be expected, especially this being my first event. Long story short, I loved it, and so did everyone else who came with me, first time or not. Great experience overall, and I would definitely do another event at some point in the future. Overall posted 3rd fastest time, which is not bad considering what other cars I was up against.

Having said that, I still maintain that there are a lot of things that autoX will not teach you about racing wheel to wheel, such as racecraft (ability to read other drivers, find ways past them), and driving the car consistently (saving tires and so on). A well rounded racer should know both. A fast lap for qualifying, and a consistent lap for the race itself.

I was quicker than the Volvo, but buy the tiniest of margins. It was seriously fast, definitely in the top 5 finishers.

Looks like a lot of fun. I have a road coarse pretty close to my house that I would like to take my car to this summer.

Very cool, I want to try an event like this some day. Looks challenging trying to get faster times then the previous runs.

Pretty bad, but I got something like 40 runs, and let several of my friends drive the car as well. The key is not to overdrive the car. I've experienced it first hand. I've dialed back some of the aggression, and the times started to drop. My fastest lap felt like I was barely moving.

Yup, that's the biggest thing I've taken from auto-x. You slow things down in your mind and at the controls you'll drive a lot faster and generally you can feel when the lap is faster.. good to see you out there at autoclub!

You got 40 runs? How??? At our local SCCA meet ups we only get about 4...

Lovin the camber in the first pic btw..

In other news, I almost sold my car to get a Volvo240. I love them. Especially the wagons.

I went with a local track group. No classing, no points, no working the course. Paid 80 dollars, and got my money's worth several times over. Look into that, and see who's running autoX events around you. If I'd go with SCCA, I'd be screwed.

I was out there with Speed Ventures. A few friends went, so I decided to join in. definitely going again, next time they are there.

It belongs to a friend of mine. Good driver, and car is fast (has AP2 s2k motor swap), but he can't put down power at all. Car is very loose, needs a lot of rear traction.

SpeedVentures are a great group of guys. Aaron is really lenient with the rules especially on open track days, and the pricing isn't half bad

I need to find one of those groups... I love autoX with the exception of the lack of seat time.
