I posted this over on another forum, and I thought it would be useful here as well. Just a copy and paste of my original post:
Its a very common thing for that thin paint on the inside of the fenders under the hood to start wearing off, and its actually quite unsightful after it gets to a certain point. That, and the fear of it coming up over the fender and ruining the exterior look of the car.
I talked to a friend at work who's one hell of an awesome body and paint guy, as well at doing a million other things, and he told me how to fix it.. here are the pics. (I did this a few months ago, but moving into a new house kept me from posting pics)
The bad areas, only on the driver side. When the hood was shut, you could even see it in the crack between the hood and the fender. Call me picky, but I didnt like seeing it!
remove the rubber bumpers and mask everything off...
Scrub it down with a green SOS pad, wipe clean, and start with some primer.
Then start with the paint.. My friend told me the color he had matches the Crystal White EXTREMELY well. For you guys that have other colors, you might have to do some hunting for the right paint
Almost like new! It might need a little wet sand to smooth out the paint line, but all in all, its a 100% improvement
The primer and paint I was lent for the job
